The 2026 World Cup opening ceremony at Estadio Ciudad de México on June 11th brought together some of the biggest names in Latin music, but Belinda’s performance meant something different. She took the stage at the same venue where she performed her first massive concert over two decades ago, wearing a pink corsé adorned with over 80,000 Swarovski crystals and singing alongside Los Ángeles Azules in front of a global audience that numbered in the millions.

The ceremony also featured Shakira, Alejandro Fernández, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Maná, Ryan Castro and Tyla, with Salma Hayek Pinault participating as ambassador. Mexico defeated South Africa in the national team’s debut later that night, adding another reason to celebrate an already charged evening.

Belinda Returns to a Familiar Stage

The return to Estadio Ciudad de México was not lost on anyone who has followed Belinda’s career from its beginning. In 2002, at ten years old, she performed at that same venue to promote “Amigos x Siempre,” her debut in Mexican telenovelas. That concert drew thousands of families and established her as a defining figure of a generation, with “El Sapito,” later popularized through “Cómplices al Rescate,” becoming one of the enduring touchstones of Mexican pop culture from that era.

She described the experience after her performance as deeply emotional and historic, expressing pride at having been part of something so important for Mexico and for the world while millions watched globally.

The Outfit and the Song

The corsét Belinda wore on stage became one of the most discussed elements of the night. Designed by Juan Carlos Plasencia, the pink Mexican corsé featured long sleeves and was paired with Levi’s denim pants, with both pieces covered in over 80,000 Swarovski crystals. She completed the look with jewelry from Jacob and Co in pink and blue tones. Some viewers online described the look as understated compared to her usual red carpet appearances, a characterization that overlooks the craftsmanship involved in covering two garments with that many hand-placed crystals.

Her performance featured “Por Ella,” a track on the Official Album of the FIFA 2026 World Cup co-written by Belinda alongside Horacio Palencia, Diego Bollella and Elías Mejía. The collaboration with Los Ángeles Azules connected two generations of Mexican popular music in a single moment, on the same stage where her story began.
