Though More Representation Is Needed, It’s Important to Celebrate Powerhouses Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal For Their Emmy Nominations

Actors Jenna Ortega and Pedro Pascal have made a lot of people proud with their leading Emmy Award nominations, showcasing the rising prominence of Latino actors in the entertainment industry. Now, their remarkable achievements have garnered well-deserved attention and signify a significant step towards Latino/e representation on screen. 

Ortega’s nomination in the Best Comedy Actress category for her role in “Wednesday” has captivated audiences and critics alike. Ortega has become the second youngest Emmy nominee in history, as highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter. The first Latina to receive this nomination was America Ferrera for her role in “Ugly Betty.”  

Nevertheless, her talent, versatility, and ability to bring depth to her characters have earned her widespread acclaim and solidified her as a rising star in the industry. From her witty personality in “Wednesday” to the famous dance that went viral on TikTok, there is no denying how much power Ortega has.  

Equally deserving of recognition is Pedro Pascal, who has secured a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance on “The Last of Us.” Pascal also earned nominations in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his appearance on “Saturday Night Live” and in the Outstanding Narrator category for his role in “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World.” Pascal’s impactful portrayal has left an indelible mark on viewers, showcasing his range and undeniable talent. His nomination, alongside Ortega’s, demonstrates the growing presence and influence of Latino actors on the prestigious Emmy stage.

However, it is important to note that there are still a lot of discrepancies when it comes to Latino/e representation in media. Though we should all take pride in Ortega’s and Pascal’s nominations, we mustn’t lose sight of the goal: to have equal representation. 

Yet, the significance of Ortega and Pascal’s nominations goes beyond their individual accomplishments. It represents a milestone in the industry’s ongoing journey towards inclusivity and authentic representation. Their nominations provide inspiration and hope for other Latino/e aspiring actors reinforcing the importance of having our community present in mainstream media.
