George Lopez and his daughter, Mayan Lopez, are in a new NBC sitcom titled “Lopez vs Lopez”. The show is about a father and daughter rekindling their relationship after not speaking much for a few years. Similar to “The George Lopez Show,” the new NBC sitcom is inspired off of real life experiences between the father and daughter co-stars and is filmed in front of a live audience.
Mayan Lopez shared thoughts on the show being inspired by her relationship with her dad.
“We perform in front of a live audience and my mom’s there every week,” said Lopez. “She was there for ‘The George Lopez Show’ that was based on (dad’s) life. And now we have another show. It’s kind of the Lopez way of doing things, making our life art so that people can enjoy and also be able to be a representation of the Latin community.”
George Lopez was one of the most recognizable comedians and actors for any kid growing up in the early 2000s. From TV to the big screen, George Lopez established himself as one of the most influential and successful comedians of all time. However, many don’t know that behind the scenes, George Lopez dealt with family struggles as a result of his own upbringing. Lopez was abandoned as a child and raised by his grandmother.
Mayan Lopez said her dad “didn’t always know how to relate to me.”
Mayan Lopez is a natural comedian, and uses humor to overcome rough patches. When negative reports started circling about George Lopez’s affairs during his marriage to her mother, Mayan didn’t let the negativity defeat her. She used it to her advantage by being open about her situation on her TikTok account—the Lopez way.
“Someone was talking about my dad, the past things that have happened, you know that my dad was unfaithful, about my parents’ divorce, and it was getting a lot of likes. And I was like, ‘You know what? I want to say something about it because some of the facts aren’t right.’ And I thought, ‘What will get people’s attention?’ And I thought, ‘Oh, let me just twerk upside down (against) a wall. Why not? I’m a comedian. I’ll go for the joke.’”
For the average father and daughter relationship in America, healing the past and starring in a NBC sitcom together might not be a possibility. However, the message to take from this is that if you’re a father, don’t let your past close off the opportunity for a new relationship with your children.
It’s also important to remember that your parents are human beings too – they have flaws just like you do. If we can learn to accept each other a little bit more rather than wish things were different or want to change each other, the past and things out of our control won’t be so heavy. For Image credit or remove please email for immediate removal - firstname.lastname@example.org
