Google has expanded its translation tool, Google Translate, to include over 110 new languages in a monumental stride towards the preservation of indigenous languages. Among these is the Náhuatl language, which is being kept alive thanks to the dedicated efforts of Mexican engineer Gabriela Salas Cabrera.

Who Is Gabriela Salas Cabrera?

Gabriela, a 28-year-old from Puerto del Caballo in Chapulhuacán, Hidalgo, is a trailblazer in the field of information technology. She holds a degree in Information Technologies from the University of Tula-Tepeji and a master’s in the same field with a specialization in Hematology. Currently, she is pursuing a degree in Mathematics from the Universidad Abierta y a Distancia de México.

According to El Milenio, Gabriela’s journey with the Náhuatl language began at home, inspired by her mother who passed down this linguistic heritage. Driven by a desire to honor her roots, Gabriela embarked on a mission to learn, preserve, and promote Náhuatl. Her dedication led her to collaborate with Google earlier this year, following her participation in a call for articles on indigenous languages.

Her contribution to Google Translate is historic. Gabriela was the only woman in a diverse team of linguists, anthropologists, and programmers, and she holds the distinction of being the first indigenous woman in the field of technology within UNESCO’s organization for women in science for the developing world.

In addition to her work with Google, Gabriela has actively shared her expertise and passion. She delivered a lecture at Google Mexico titled “Rescue of Indigenous Languages Through Artificial Intelligence,” where she discussed her insights and experiences in using technology to preserve linguistic diversity.

Keeping Náhuatl Alive

The fruition of Gabriela’s efforts is now visible in the operational Náhuatl translator, providing speakers and learners of the language access to an invaluable resource. Furthermore, she continues her mission with Chat GPT, focusing on rescuing endangered languages in Mexico.

The incorporation of Náhuatl into Google Translate highlights the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and demonstrates the role of technology in this endeavor. Gabriela Salas Cabrera’s achievements inspire a future where technology and tradition coexist, ensuring the preservation of invaluable linguistic treasures for generations to come.
