The Billboard Latin Music Awards will introduce a new category this year, and its very first recipient will be one of the most recognizable names in contemporary Mexican music. Peso Pluma, born in Guadalajara and at the forefront of the corridos tumbados movement, is set to receive the Billboard Vanguard Award on October 23 in Miami. The recognition was announced by Telemundo and Billboard, who described his career as a journey shaped by innovation, cultural pride, and a constant drive to represent Mexico on the global stage.

For Peso Pluma, the honor feels deeply personal. He called it “an incredible privilege” and spoke about how it allows him to carry his people, his roots, and his flag with him wherever he goes. He added that what excites him most is continuing to revolutionize music while showing the world the heart of Mexico.

Corridos Tumbados Cross Borders

The sound that brought Peso Pluma to international attention is rooted in corridos tumbados, a subgenre that fuses traditional Mexican elements with trap and hip hop. While Natanael Cano pioneered the format at the end of the last decade, it was Peso Pluma who gave the movement global reach. With a distinctive voice and a style that balances regional heritage with urban influences, he built bridges to audiences who may have never encountered corridos before.

Collaborations have been central to his growth. He has recorded alongside groups such as Eslabón Armado and Junior H, teamed up with Karol G and Becky G, and even stepped into the U.S. urban scene with artists like Quavo and Cardi B. Each partnership showed the elasticity of the genre, proving it could hold its own in different markets without losing the identity that ties it to Mexico.

A Year Of Records And Recognition

Peso Pluma’s rise reached new heights in 2023 when “Ella baila sola,” recorded with Eslabón Armado, became the first regional Mexican song to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. That achievement placed his music side by side with global hits and signaled a shift in how mainstream audiences consume Spanish-language tracks. Later that year, his album Génesis debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, an accomplishment that remains rare for artists singing in Spanish.

Those milestones cemented his role not only as a performer but as an ambassador for regional Mexican music, demonstrating that the corridos tumbados style could move far outside its home turf. His story reflects a shift in the industry where boundaries are less rigid and where genres tied to specific regions can thrive on international platforms.

Preparing For A Special Night In Miami

The Billboard Latin Music Awards will serve as the conclusion of Latin Music Week in Miami, which runs from October 20 to October 24. Peso Pluma will take the stage as both performer and honoree, marking another chapter in a career that has consistently expanded expectations of what regional Mexican music can achieve. The Vanguard Award, designed to honor visionaries who reshape the musical landscape, finds in him an artist who has fused tradition with experimentation and given a global audience a new entry point into Mexican culture.
