A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit that accused Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny of illegally sampling music in one of the songs from his 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti. The case focused on the track “Enséñame a bailar,” which a Nigerian artist claimed included elements taken from his own recording. The ruling closes the case after the plaintiff failed to move the lawsuit forward within the deadline set by the court.

The complaint was filed in May 2025 by Nigerian musician Ezeani Chidera Godfrey, who performs under the name Dera. He argued that the song used a sample from his 2019 track “Empty My Pocket.”

The Claim Against “Enséñame a bailar”

In the lawsuit, Dera alleged that parts of his earlier recording appeared in Bad Bunny’s song without authorization. The complaint claimed the Puerto Rican artist and others involved in the production had been alerted about the issue.

According to the filing, the plaintiff said those contacted ignored the warning and “turned a blind eye.”

The accusation targeted “Enséñame a bailar,” a track included on Un Verano Sin Ti, the album that helped reinforce Bad Bunny’s position as one of the most influential figures in global Latin music.

The Deadline That Ended the Case

As per reporting by Billboard, U.S. District Judge Otis Wright previously gave the plaintiff an opportunity to move the case forward in court. The deadline passed without a response.

Because the required step never occurred, the judge dismissed the case.

“Consequently, the court dismisses this action and all claims asserted in it with prejudice,” Wright wrote in the order, according to Billboard.

The phrase “with prejudice” means the claims cannot be filed again in the same court.

A Legal Dispute That Stops Here

The decision ends the dispute without a trial or additional hearings. The ruling also leaves the song untouched in Bad Bunny’s catalog.

The lawsuit had briefly raised questions about sampling practices in contemporary music, yet the case now closes due to the procedural lapse rather than a decision about the song itself.
