May 2nd is Latina Action Day in California, an advocacy day dedicated to lifting up the Latina community by raising the voices and experiences of Latinas at statewide policy-making tables.

While we’d argue that every day should be Latina Action Day, the fact that there is a day focusing solely on the advancement of Latinas is something to celebrate. It is also something we should all be aware of considering it focuses on all aspects of civic life in California.

About this year’s Latina Action Day

Organized by Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE®), this year the 28th Annual Latina Action Day will take place at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento. HOPE® is a non-profit, non-partisan, organization committed to ensuring political and economic parity for Latinas through leadership, advocacy, and education to benefit all communities and the status of women.

Yes, the event will be in person and there are some Covid-19 protocols to be aware of as well.

All attendees must show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 before entering the event and masks are required during the event – except when guests are actively eating and drinking.

What will take place at this event?

The event will bring together over 400 Latinas throughout California at the State Capitol, with the overarching mission of engaging Latinas in conversation and educational sessions about state policy to help advance and advocate for Latinas in the community and beyond.

Topics will include education, healthcare, economic, and civic empowerment; it is an opportunity for Latinas to make their voices heard and share their opinions with decision-makers on what matters most to them. The conference will also honor and celebrate the many contributions of Latina community advocates, elected officials in the California Legislature, and Latinas serving in the Gubernatorial Administration.

An opportunity to be heard

This day is all about mobilizing Latina leaders statewide to voice their concerns on issues impacting their communities. It is a valuable networking opportunity and a chance to learn. It too is a moment to inspire others and to be empowered by the collective voice of Latinas in leadership. Ranging from policymakers to media talent, business and non-profit directors, and other Latina leaders in California, the impressive roster of speakers, panelists, and moderators is enough to make your head spin. From Eleni Kounalakis, Lieutenant Governor of California to Lourdes Castro Ramirez, the Secretary of the CA Business, Consumer Services & Housing Agency, and Cruz Grimaldo, the Assistant Vice Chancellor & Director, Financial Aid & Scholarships at UC Berkeley, you can expect to hear from big things at this event.

How can you be part of it?

The Latina Action Day event is currently sold out, but stay tuned for information on next year’s event as well as for other HOPE events such as Latina History Day and Latina Empowerment Day. Any day to celebrate, collaborate, lift up, and mobilize other Latinas is a day worth being a part of.
