The anticipation surrounding Wicked has drawn attention to its Spanish adaptation, featuring Mexican singer and actress, Danna Paola, as the voice of Elphaba. Her involvement bridges the upcoming film to her celebrated performance in Mexico’s stage production, where she portrayed the green-skinned protagonist for over a year.

Danna Paola Has a Complicated History with ‘Wicked’

Danna’s history with the role began in the theater, but her casting wasn’t without controversy. Known to many as the star behind the theme song for the beloved children’s telenovela Atrévete a soñar, her transition to a complex musical role drew skepticism. Critics questioned whether someone associated with lighthearted TV could handle the demands of Wicked. “People would say, ‘How can the girl from Mundo de Caramelo perform in Wicked?’” Danna recalled. The criticism motivated her to rise to the occasion. “For me, it was a challenge. I had to believe in myself one hundred percent.”

Her time in Wicked became a transformative chapter in her career. In an interview with YouTuber Gaby Meza, Danna reflected on how the experience reshaped her as a performer. “I didn’t realize what I could do on stage,” she admitted. Initially unfamiliar with musicals, she embraced the rigorous demands of the production. “It was a huge learning experience.”

The role of Elphaba came with its own struggles. Danna opened up about facing bullying, not only from the media but also within the industry. “It’s something I haven’t spoken about before. I suffered a lot of bullying when I was cast,” she shared. Despite the negativity, her resilience and the support of key collaborators carried her forward. She credited her co-star Cecilia de la Cueva, who also lent her voice to the film adaptation, and director Lisa for their encouragement. “Ceci always empowered me, and Lisa was incredible.”

Danna’s connection to Elphaba runs deep. The character’s story mirrored her own journey of self-discovery and empowerment. “At the start of the show, I felt that same desire to be different and change things,” she said. “Painting myself green turned me into the character. It gave me a special kind of power.”

About the Movie

This Wicked film explores Elphaba’s early years in Oz, long before Dorothy’s arrival. It explores her studies at Shiz University and the beginnings of her unexpected bond with Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North. With Danna Paola reprising her connection to Elphaba, the Spanish adaptation promises to bring a unique depth to this much-loved story.
