Eugenio Derbez must have wished he was hiding under a rock right about now after criticizing Selena Gómez’s performance in Emilia Pérez. His commentary hasn’t gone too well with online warriors and the backlash has been brutal to watch.

What’s Going on with Eugenio Derbez and Selena Gómez?

On the podcast Hablando de Cine con Gaby Meza, Derbez called Gómez’s portrayal “indefensible.” This wild remark drew swift responses.

Gómez, who plays Jessi del Monte in Jacques Audiard’s film about violence and narcotrafficking in Mexico, addressed the comments with a measured grace. On social media, she explained that, while her Spanish wasn’t perfect, she gave the role everything she had. “I did the best I could with the time I had,” Gómez wrote. The “Love You Like a Love Song” singer has previously gone on record about how she often tries to learn more about her Mexican heritage and would love to learn the Spanish language too. Her response, calm but resolute, turned the criticism into a platform to defend her dedication to the craft.

The uproar that followed forced Derbez into an uncomfortable position. Realizing the gravity of his words, he posted an apology, acknowledging that his remarks had been inappropriate. “As Latinos, it’s essential we support one another,” Derbez said, walking back his harsh words. Though some may say he was providing constructive criticism, the delivery wasn’t the best, and he might understand this now. He admitted that his comments had failed to reflect his respect for Gómez, reaffirming his admiration for her career. But the damage had been done.

The Support Continues

As all of this unfolded, Belinda, the Mexican pop star, stepped into the fray. She, too, took to social media, condemning the coldness of Derbez’s critique. “It is lamentable to express oneself so coldly about the work and effort of such a talented and admirable woman as Selena Gómez,” Belinda wrote. Her call for more empathy in public discourse struck a chord with those who believed that critique, especially in the public eye, should consider the human element behind the work. “Words can hurt,” she continued, urging caution in how we speak about the efforts of others.

The dispute, however, has not overshadowed the success of Emilia Pérez. Despite the divisive criticism, the film has been met with acclaim on the international stage. It has earned recognition at high-profile festivals such as Cannes and the European Film Awards, where its exploration of Mexico’s violent landscape has struck a powerful note with audiences. Gómez’s performance, while questioned by some, has not dimmed the film’s ability to generate conversation and debate.
