Mexican authorities arrested Iván Martín, identified as a suspected co-author of the feminicide of content creator Valeria Márquez, who was shot and killed in May 2025 while conducting a live stream from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. The arrest was carried out on Saturday, August 1st, in an operation led by the Jalisco Attorney General’s specialized unit for crimes against women, children and adolescents, in coordination with the Mexican Army and the National Guard, according to reporting by El Nuevo Día citing EFE.

The Jalisco Attorney General’s office obtained both an arrest warrant for Iván Martín and a search warrant for a property in the San Juan de Ocotán neighborhood of Zapopan as part of the ongoing investigation into the crime. During the search operation, conducted between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, authorities seized two firearms, one caliber .40 and one 9 millimeter, along with cell phones and identification documents, all of which have been incorporated into the investigation.

What the Investigation Has Established

The attack on Valeria Márquez was carefully planned. Investigators determined that two vehicles were used to carry out the crime, a motorcycle and a white car that served as the getaway vehicle for those involved. Authorities reconstructed the route taken by the perpetrators using footage from the C5 surveillance camera system and private video recordings from the area surrounding the salon.

The circumstances of Márquez’s death have been documented in disturbing detail. On the day she was killed, a friend was present with her in the salon and had informed her that someone would be sending a gift to her location, encouraging her to stay. A man posing as a delivery person arrived at the salon and shot her. At the moment of the attack, that same friend ended the live stream that Márquez had been conducting when she was killed. The beauty salon where the shooting occurred has remained closed throughout the duration of the investigation.

Iván Martín’s arrest warrant specifies his alleged participation before, during and after the attack that took Márquez’s life, indicating that investigators believe his involvement extended across multiple phases of the crime rather than being limited to the moment of the shooting itself.

The Cartel Connection and Who Ordered the Killing

The arrest of Iván Martín followed by days the detention of Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known by the alias “R1,” identified by federal authorities as the leader of a faction called Los Rs, operating within the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and dedicated to drug trafficking, extortion and arms trafficking across Jalisco and Michoacán.

Mexico’s Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, revealed after R1’s arrest that his son had maintained a romantic relationship with Márquez, had threatened her and that the investigation points to him having asked his father to order her killing. That son remains a fugitive and is being sought as the alleged intellectual author of the feminicide that occurred on May 13th, 2025. The capture of R1 also allowed investigators to advance in a separate case involving the assassination of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo on November 1st, 2025, a crime in which Álvarez Ayala is also suspected of having played a directing role.

What Comes Next in the Case

The Jalisco Attorney General’s office confirmed that field and office work will continue with the goal of fully clarifying the circumstances of Márquez’s feminicide and detaining all remaining individuals allegedly involved in the crime. The investigation has already produced two major arrests and established a clear line connecting the killing to organized crime, but the person identified as the intellectual author of the crime remains at large.

Valeria Márquez was a young Mexican entrepreneur and content creator whose life was taken publicly, in real time, in front of an audience who had tuned in to watch her work. The case has drawn sustained attention in Mexico and across Latin America as an illustration of the violence that women face at the intersection of public visibility and organized crime, and the ongoing investigation represents one of the most closely watched feminicide cases in the country’s recent history.
