Mon Laferte received the Gaviota de Platino at the 65th Festival de Viña del Mar, becoming the sixth artist in the event’s history to obtain its highest honor. The distinction is the most important prize granted by the festival and has been awarded only six times.

The recognition came during her third appearance at the Quinta Vergara.

A Prize Reserved for Established Careers

The Gaviota de Platino was first presented in 2012 to Luis Miguel in recognition of his 30 year career. Since then, it has been delivered on limited occasions. The piece is crafted in chrome rhodium, set with 85 Swarovski crystals, and valued at approximately 1,000,000 pesos. It is granted to artists with distinguished careers and a documented bond with the festival.

Before Mon Laferte, the recipients included Isabel Pantoja in 2017 in connection with a tribute to Juan Gabriel, Lucho Gatica in 2019 through his nephew Humberto Gatica, Los Jaivas in 2023 during their 60 year anniversary, and Myriam Hernández in 2025, who became the first woman to receive the award directly under the current format.

With this recognition, Mon Laferte becomes the third woman and the fourth Chilean figure to obtain the Platino.

Speculation and Eligibility Questions

Hours before her performance, reports indicated that the municipal decree governing the award had been modified. According to the festival’s rules, two requirements must be met to receive the Platino: at least 30 years of artistic career and an intimate and reciprocal bond with the Festival de Viña.

Her relationship with Viña was established. She had already performed twice at the Quinta Vergara and had built a strong connection with the audience known as el monstruo. The complication centered on the 30 year requirement, since although she began her career at a young age, she did not formally meet that threshold.

The discussion shifted once the show was underway. After performing “Mi buen amor” and “Tu falta de querer,” she began to say goodbye. The audience responded with loud jeers, signaling they wanted the highest award delivered before she left the stage. Mayor Macarena Ripamonti then appeared to present the Gaviota de Platino.

Through tears, Mon Laferte addressed the crowd. “The truth is I don’t even know what to say. I only want to tell every person here that I truly love you, I genuinely love my audience and my country. The only thing I wish for each person is that they be happy. Much love to all of you.” Her remarks were originally delivered in Spanish.

A Career Lived in Public

Her set included “Amor completo” and “Amárrame,” along with a performance of “Pa’ dónde se fue” alongside Chilean singers Akrilla and Javiera Electra. After receiving the award, she performed “Vida normal” and closed with “Antes de ti.”

For those who have followed her trajectory, the Platino carries meaning separate from the trophy itself. It acknowledges a career lived in full view of the public, including the periods she has openly described as painful and unstable. She has spoken about heartbreak and about struggling with alcohol, and she has allowed those experiences to shape her music instead of hiding them. Her audience has witnessed that process and remained beside her as she turned those chapters into songs that connected across countries. Receiving the festival’s highest distinction affirms that she stands today in a place she once had to fight to reach.
