‘Pónganse Bien Truchas’: Peso Pluma Warns of Industry ‘Snakes’ at This Year's Billboard Latin Music Week

Billboard Latin Music Week made its return, solidifying its place as the most significant gathering of Latin artists and industry executives worldwide.

This year’s event, held at the iconic Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater, saw a lineup of influential Latin artists and executives, including Young Miko, Yahritza y Su Esencia, Yandel, Pipe Bueno, Peso Pluma, and so many more. The day was filled with intimate workshops where these artists shared insights with eager attendees. Yet, it was Peso Pluma, during one of the final programs of the day, who left the audience with a powerful warning about the industry’s darker side, particularly within the corridos genre.

Peso Pluma, born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, took the stage with his close friends Fidel Castro from Grupo Marca Registrada, Tito Doble P, and Jasiel Nuñez to discuss the “Nuevo Mexicano” movement. In a conversation led by Leila Cobo, Billboard Latin’s Chief Content Officer, Peso and his group spoke candidly about their rise to fame, the current state of corridos tumbados, and key moments in their careers. However, as the session drew to a close, Peso Pluma took a serious turn, cautioning the audience about the dangers lurking in the music industry.

Peso Pluma Came Prepared to Warn Everyone at the Billboard Latin Music Week

Rough Translation

“Things aren’t always what they seem, like people say about Hollywood. Don’t fall into stupidity. Your work — what you create and experience, whether in a notebook, a phone, whatever — is art. It’s worth more than any money they can give you or any contract you might sign.

Stay sharp. There are a lot of snakes in this industry. I’m not going to name names, but there are many who come on stage, kiss me, and tell me they love me, but behind my back, it’s a different story. So, stay alert and don’t get fooled.”

Rooting for the Next Generation of Music

Peso didn’t hold back, declaring that he felt like one of the only artists”con huevos” to address this issue on such a large platform. He emphasized that he’s rooting for emerging talent, hoping they remain vigilant in their pursuits.

While Peso Pluma didn’t call out specific individuals, the audience appreciated his raw and candid advice. Like it or not, Peso Pluma is transforming the industry and pushing boundaries in ways few others are willing to do.
