In February 2023, Karol G released her transformative album Mañana Será Bonito. In the span of a year, this work has touched more lives than she could have ever imagined. Not only did the album shatter records, but her accompanying tours also became monumental events. Yet, the most profound impact lies in the emotional healing her music provided to countless individuals, myself included.

During this period, her predominantly Latina fanbase gravitated toward her reggaeton rhythms and provocative lyrics, only to find themselves confronting their inner child. This album felt different. It was evident from the promotional material. Initially, it seemed incongruous as we were accustomed to the Bichota persona – a symbol of confidence, strength, and fearlessness. However, Karol G redefined what it means to be a Bichota, reminding us that even powerful women are allowed their vulnerabilities.

Why This Matters

In the Latino community, there is a longstanding expectation for women to maintain their composure regardless of circumstances. Mental health issues have historically been sidelined for ostensibly more pressing matters. Seeking therapy was often dismissed as something “de locos,” leaving many to grapple with their emotions in isolation. This approach was unsustainable, particularly if we aimed to break the generational curses that have plagued us for so long.

When her album was released, it began with the beautiful “Mientras Me Curo del Cora.” That song was on constant replay for me. I longed to feel the tranquility it conveyed seep into my own heart. But, as Karol G demonstrated, healing is a gradual process. (Don’t forget that this process also requires support through friends, therapy, and anything that can bring you back to the light.) Through this song and many others on her album, I found solace and healing.

La Bichota not only encouraged us to listen to our hearts but also to tend to them. She interwove tracks that coaxed us out of our shells. Songs like “Mañana Será Bonito” with Carla Morrison compelled us to face our realities with newfound confidence.

On Attending the ‘Mañana Será Bonito’ Tour

I had the privilege of attending her Mañana Será Bonito tour in Miami, held at the outdoor Hard Rock Stadium. The venue enveloped us in the familiar Miami heat, yet we all adorned outfits that embodied the album’s vibe (even if we were sweaty beyond belief). I wore a studded corset, a white skirt, and gems around my eyes, feeling ethereal. Seeing the artist who had been my unwitting healer for most of the year was transcendent. When she performed “Mientras Me Curo del Cora,” I wept alongside my best friend, reflecting on the year’s challenges. It was a special experience, one I suspect was shared by many in the audience.

Karol G’s influence extended across three tours: one in the United States, one in Latin America, and one in Europe. She spread hope and positivity across three continents, and I’m sure this was gravely needed.

Now, her Mañana Será Bonito era is coming to an end in Madrid, Spain. She will be streaming her last concert on YouTube, and I’ll be at home watching it as I look back at how much I’ve grown since the release of this album.

Though I don’t know this fellow paisa, I feel like I do. And for that, I can only give her so many thanks for bringing me back.
