Rosalía walked into the James L. Knight Center in Miami on Thursday night as a Spanish artist who makes music in Spanish and walked out with three Billboard Latin Music Awards, including the Hall of Fame honor delivered into her hands by Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra. Her album “LUX,” a record spanning songs in thirteen languages, took Top Latin Pop Album of the Year, and she also claimed the Latin Pop Artist of the Year award in the solo category. It was an evening that confirmed what has been clear for years: the girl from Barcelona has made herself into one of the most respected figures in Latin music, and she knows exactly who she owes for that.

She Said the Quiet Part Out Loud About Where She Comes From

Rosalía used her acceptance speech for the Top Latin Pop Album award to say something she clearly felt needed saying. She told the audience she was not entirely sure “LUX” qualified as a pop record, but that she knew with certainty she was from Barcelona and made her music in Spanish. She thanked Latin America for the place it had given her, for years of inspiration and learning, and said she hoped to keep finding ways to return that love and generosity.

She has spent years navigating questions about authenticity and belonging in a genre that did not always know where to place her, and Thursday night she addressed that history directly without apology.

Juan Luis Guerra Handed Her the Hall of Fame Award and She Fell Apart in the Best Way

The Hall of Fame moment belonged to Guerra as much as it belonged to Rosalía. She addressed him directly in her speech and told him she wanted to thank him with her whole heart for the honor of receiving the award from his hands specifically. She called him a master among masters and said his songs had made her cry, dance and feel alive. She said she believed she would never forget the moment or the fact that it was him standing there to give it to her.

The award recognized her musical innovation, her artistic vision and her international reach across genres, languages and borders. Rosalía used the occasion to name the people who made her work possible in the first place, saying she could not do what she does without the artists who came before her and opened the road. She mentioned Celia Cruz, Rocío Dúrcal, Vicente Fernández and Daddy Yankee alongside Guerra as previous Hall of Fame recipients she deeply admires, and said it was extraordinary to find herself in that company.

She Was the Only Woman Among the Night’s Special Honorees

The Billboard Latin Music Awards recognized four artists with special honors on Thursday, and Rosalía was the only woman among them. Rubén Blades, Cristian Castro and Fuerza Regida received the other distinctions. Her three wins across the evening placed her at the center of a ceremony that otherwise skewed heavily male. She has spent her career earning her place in rooms that were not originally built with her in mind, and Thursday night in Miami she left with three awards that settled the question of whether she belongs there.
