Aleks Syntek, a man whose most recognizable song features Ana Torroja and not his own solo voice, is having a moment. Not the kind of moment where a hit record climbs the charts or a moving ballad earns a new audience. No, this is a moment in which Syntek claims to have been flirted with by Shakira during a backstage encounter at her Mexico City concert. He is telling the world that he, fragile and humbled by her attention, stood beside his wife and daughter while Shakira herself allegedly called him handsome and youthful. This, naturally, has opened the door to a flood of side-eyes and sarcastic commentary.

Please. Colombians are polite. They are warm. They are raised to say something nice even if someone shows up to the party with hair dye that went wrong. I would know as a Colombian myself. But seriously, what water is this man drinking that is quenching his delusions? Is it carbonated? Infused with imagination?

Syntek’s Version of Events

According to Syntek, he was invited backstage to greet Shakira during her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.” He recounted the moment on Azteca Noreste MTY’s YouTube channel with theatrical precision. Shakira, he claims, looked at him and said, “You look handsome, what did you do to yourself, Alex? You look so young.” He explained that he was there with his wife and daughter, introducing Natalia as his daughter and an actress. Shakira allegedly replied, “No, no, no, no. She looks like your sister, huh? I mean, she looks like your sister. You look young. Also, what did you do to yourself? You look very handsome.”

This, he said, made him uncomfortable. Not because of the power imbalance or the oddity of receiving compliments in front of family. But because, according to him, Shakira was being flirtatious. He can’t be serious, right?

Social Media Has Questions

Syntek’s claims were obviously met with a cascade of digital eye rolls. Critics pointed out his long record of less-than-supportive comments about Shakira’s career and public persona. They reminded the internet of the time he questioned whether she should release breakup songs about her ex, Gerard Piqué. He mused aloud about the potential effects on her children and insisted that a responsible parent should avoid attacking the other in public.

For someone with opinions about appropriate behavior, Syntek’s choice to publicly describe this alleged flirtation with Shakira — while his wife and daughter were present — was seen as ironic at best.

He Says They Go Way Back

In an effort to soften the blow or perhaps bolster his story, Syntek shared that he has known Shakira since their youth. He described a time in Argentina when both appeared on MTV programs and claimed that her parents trusted him to take her out to nightclubs. According to Syntek, they shared meals and spent time together, a detail intended to make his retelling sound more familial and less opportunistic.

But that familiarity, if it did exist, has not given him immunity from backlash. Instead, it raised eyebrows about why he has continually brought up Shakira’s name in contexts that benefit his own visibility.

Latinos Do Not Forget

For many in the Latino community, Shakira is a queen. She represents cultural pride, the success of a Latina who sang in Spanish, danced barefoot, and taught the world about Colombia without ever needing to borrow someone else’s voice. To hear a man with a limited solo discography, best known for “Duele el Amor,” step forward and suggest that Shakira disrespected his family is, frankly, hard to process. Especially when his previous contributions to the conversation have been far from generous.

He may claim the compliments were unsolicited. He may claim discomfort. But what he cannot claim is that this story has helped him. Instead, it has drawn attention to the way public figures still use the names of women, particularly women who represent entire nations, to manufacture relevance.

Shakira has not responded. And really, she does not need to. Her silence does what Syntek’s comments cannot.
