The new film of the classic doll line, “Barbie,” will have its dose of Latino talent. America Ferrera has joined Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the cast of the Warner Bros. production.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach, “Barbie” will bring the iconic couple Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling) to the big screen. The role America Ferrera will play has yet to be revealed.

As reported by Deadline, given Gerwig’s track record as a director, it is expected that this will not be your typical doll story. Robbie is producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment production label and LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley. Robbie Brenner will also produce through Mattel and David Heyman through Heyday Films. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are executive producing.

Production on “Barbie” is set to begin early this year at WB’s Leavesden Studios in London and is slated for release in 2023.

As Variety reported, plans to adapt Mattel’s doll tale to the big screen have been brewing for some time but were cemented when Robbie, Gerwig, and Baumbach embarked on the project in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

For her part, Ferrera will also make her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of Erika Sanchez’s best-selling novel, “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,” and Sanchez will co-produce the film. She also has the highly anticipated Apple TV+ limited series “We Crashed,” which will premiere in March and also stars Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway.
