Who remembers the beginning of Bad Bunny?

Benito Martínez Ocasio has been giving his loyal audience base anthems for years. However, anyone who has listened to Bad Bunny from his early days knows how iconic it is when he uses the phrase, “Bad Bunny, baby,” as his songs’ intro. Historically, these three short words usually foreshadow a banger, often a trap song.

But this phrase didn’t come out of thin air. In fact, Bad Bunny’s ex-fiancé, Carliz de la Cruz Hernández, is the sultry voice heard in the famed intro. Upon a request from Benito in 2015, De la Cruz Hernández recorded her voice on her phone and shared it with him. This was, of course, before Bad Bunny was a household name and when his passion for music was fueled by seemingly far-fetched dreams. Carliz’s voice was first heard on the intro for the song “Pa Ti,” solidifying her contribution to the Puerto Rican artist’s discography.

Since then, De la Cruz Hernández and El Conejo Malo’s romance is nonexistent and their paths are no longer shared: Carliz is a practicing lawyer and, well, Bad Bunny is on top of the world.

Now, almost a decade later, Carliz filed a lawsuit against Bad Bunny and his record label, Rimas, because she claims that her voice was used without permission and is in violation of her image and copyright. She sued on March 1st, 2023, and is requesting millions.

But it was no secret that it was Carliz who voiced the “Bad Bunny, baby” intro. Bad Bunny’s fans were well-aware – this was public knowledge.

Carliz vs Bad Bunny

According to Noticel, Carliz was not in agreement for Benito or Rimas to use her voice in his latest, “Un Verano Sin Ti.” Within it, in the song “Dos Mil 16,” her voice is heard in the intro. Prior to the release of the album, the record label allegedly reached out to Carliz to come to an agreement where they requested the full rights to use her voice.

As per emails submitted as evidence for the lawsuit, Carliz claims they offered her up to $20,000. However, she did not accept their proposal. Without reaching an agreement between all parties involved, the album was still launched, and the phrase “Bad Bunny, baby” was heard millions of times. Bad Bunny went on to sing the song throughout his “World’s Hottest Tour” in 2022. This, without a doubt, muddied the waters even more.

Carliz’s voice has been played over 60 million times on YouTube and over 250 million times on Spotify for her feature in the song “Dos Mil 16,” and it has been reproduced about 350 million times on YouTube and over 230 million times for being part of the song, “Pa Ti.”

De la Cruz Hernández and Martínez Ocasio were involved romantically from the year 2011 until 2016.

This is a developing story.
