A new rendition of “The Little Mermaid” is being released in 2023. It stars Halle Bailey, a talented and beautiful Black actress. The rest of the cast is composed of Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Lorena Andrea (Perla), Awkwafina (Scuttle), among many other talented figures.

The heavy discourse around a fictional character

Though the general consensus is that diverse casting needs to be top of mind, there are some who disagree.

After the official trailer was released, many people flocked to their social media to show their approval of the upcoming film. However, some people  – well, let’s call them what they are: racists – expressed their disdain for the Black mermaid. Apparently, in their books, mermaids are white, with what we are assuming, who rock eurocentric features.

Since the trailer’s release, its YouTube video has garnered over one million dislikes. We can assure you it’s not because of the acting quality, overall production, or theme.

On Twitter, where many racists are empowered to express their hatred, they went on to write their disapproval. How dare a mermaid, a fictional character, a creature humans have never proved exists, be Black?

Um, who hurt these people? There’s nothing wrong with diversity, especially in a fantasy film. Let’s hope Bailey is doing well after this unnecessary backlash. There’s no reason why this should’ve happened. Everyone deserves to feel represented in every aspect of the media. It won’t hurt anyone or humanity – that’s for damn sure.

These reactions to ‘The Little Mermaid’ remind us why representation matters

In fact, there are parents posting the reactions of their children as they watch the “Little Mermaid Trailer.” A Twitter user, Lai, whose username is @normanination4 posted a compilation of the videos on her page.

In the middle of all the negativity, these reaction videos are a reminder that there’s always a sliver of hope in anything. To end this, let’s not forget how promoting proper representation can be life-saving.
