On Saturday night, Mexican professional boxer, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, faced off against Gennady Golovkin aka GGG for the third time in a fight that clearly mirrored the former two matches.

The fighters respected each other‘s power too much to fight comfortably, so the most patient boxer controlled the pace. Canelo won in a decision victory, ending the historic trilogy by winning two of the three fights.

Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin, the talk of the town

In today’s generation of boxing, there was not a more talked about matchup in the middleweight division than Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin. Both boxers dominated the middleweight division through multiple title defense victories and incredible knockout streaks.

Even though their track record solidified them as the best in their division, it took a long time for the two to meet in the ring. It made fans wonder if the middleweight champions were picking their opponents too carefully.

Questioning their track record

For example, Canelo had victories on his record from tremendous champions and future Hall of Famers like James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto. However, Canelo faced off against Kirkland years past his prime, and James Kirkland was without trainer Ann Wolfe in his corner. Any boxing aficionado will tell you that no boxer had a greater collapse in performance without a specific trainer in his corner than James Kirkland without Ann Wolfe. Even Mike Tyson’s drop-off in performance without Cus D’Amato does not compare to Kirkland’s drop-off.

Canelo also faced Miguel Cotto way past his prime. Cotto used the jab as his main weapon rather than his notorious left hook making it clear he was not the same aggressive fighter.

You could say that Canelo lost the two biggest challenges in his career –  Floyd Mayweather and moving up in weight to fight Dimitry Bivol, which was Canelo’s last fight.

On the other side of the ring, Gennady Golovkin knocked out opponent after opponent but the majority of boxing fans forgot the name of Golovkin’s opponents before they woke up from the knockout.

Many were underwhelmed

From the opening bell, Canelo dominated GGG with his counter punching and accurate left-hand punches. Still, everyone watching at home, the live audience, and the commentators were all wondering when Gennady Golovkin would turn it up and treat this fight like it was the last time the two would face off.

The pace dragged on with Canelo winning round after round. In the final 45 seconds of the 12th round, Gennady Golovkin turned up the gas, but it was much too little and way too late.

Fans should feel unsatisfied with this performance.

What can fans hope for?

At one point, the Mexican boxer, Canelo, looked to be on track. It seemed as though he was testing himself with his future opponents. But, after losing his last match with Dimitry Bivol and unspectacularly winning a fight with 40-year-old Golovkin (after promising a first-round knockout), we can only hope that he gets more daring when choosing his future opponents.
