Deadly Attack At Teotihuacán Pyramids In Mexico Leaves One Dead And Tourists Injured

A shooting at the Teotihuacán archaeological site, one of Mexico’s most visited landmarks, left a Canadian tourist dead and multiple people injured, bringing violence into a location known for its historical and cultural importance.

The attack took place around midday near the Pyramid of the Moon, one of the two main structures at the site, where visitors were gathered. According to federal authorities, a man opened fire and later took his own life. The area was quickly secured by members of the National Guard and state police, who recovered a firearm, ammunition, and a knife at the scene.

A Shooting At A Major Tourist Site

Teotihuacán, located north of Mexico City, receives over 1.5 million visitors each year and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The presence of international tourists was reflected in the number of victims, with authorities confirming that individuals from several countries were affected.

Initial reports confirmed the death of a Canadian woman. Authorities later stated that 13 people were injured, including six U.S. citizens, three Colombians, two Brazilians, one Russian, and another Canadian.

Medical services transported several of the injured to a nearby hospital. According to the public health system, four individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while others were treated for fractures, sprains, and anxiety.

What Authorities Have Said

According to BBC, officials indicated that the suspect appeared to act alone. Early findings suggest that he was positioned on an upper level of the Pyramid of the Moon before the shooting began.

Witness accounts described a confrontation shortly before the attack. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect and have asked for time to complete forensic analysis.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims and confirmed that an investigation is underway. She stated that federal agencies are working alongside local authorities and that communication with the Canadian embassy is ongoing.

An Investigation Underway

Authorities have placed the site under control while continuing to examine the sequence of events. The focus remains on understanding how the attack began and how it unfolded in a crowded public setting.

The shooting has drawn attention to security at major tourist destinations, particularly those that attract large numbers of international visitors, as officials work to determine what led to the incident and how to prevent similar events in the future.
