A Mexican national dies inside a Florida detention facility while in immigration custody, prompting an official response from Mexico’s foreign ministry and a request for clarification surrounding the circumstances of the case.

The agency confirmed that the individual was being held at the Glades County Detention Center, a facility operated by the county through an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and described the death as unacceptable while calling for a full investigation.

A Death in Immigration Facility

Mexican authorities reported that the consulate in Miami activated its protocol after learning of the death, visiting the detention center and initiating contact with the victim’s family while requesting official reports and documentation from U.S. authorities.

The case remains under investigation, with officials stating that they will pursue legal and diplomatic channels to clarify what occurred and determine responsibility.

In its statement, the Mexican government stressed that deaths in custody require a prompt and thorough review and called on authorities to establish clear findings and prevent similar cases.

Ongoing Cases and Official Response

This incident follows another case reported earlier in March in California, bringing the number of Mexican nationals who have died while in ICE custody during the current administration to over 10.

Mexican officials referenced these cases while reiterating the importance of transparency and cooperation in investigations involving individuals held for immigration-related reasons.

ICE has faced previous scrutiny regarding detention conditions, access to oversight, and operational practices, all of which remain part of ongoing public and institutional discussions.

Support for the Family

Authorities stated that efforts remain focused on supporting the victim’s family while the investigation moves forward, including assistance through the Mexican consulate.

The foreign ministry emphasized that it will continue to engage with U.S. officials through diplomatic channels to obtain clarity on the case and ensure that the necessary processes are followed.

A Call for Clarity

Mexico’s government reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of its nationals abroad, stating that it will use available legal and diplomatic mechanisms to follow this case closely.

The investigation now moves forward as officials seek a clearer understanding of what occurred inside the facility and the factors that led to the death.
