Demi Lovato is returning to Disney Channel for the first time in 16 years, reprising her role as Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock 3, the third installment of the franchise that launched her career and became one of the defining cultural touchstones of a generation of young viewers. The film premieres on August 13th, 2026 at 8 p.m. Eastern on Disney Channel and arrives on Disney+ globally the following day.

Lovato had initially been announced only as executive producer, with no mention of an acting role, which made her appearance on screen one of the more genuinely surprising reveals of the summer. The confirmation came just hours before the world premiere, held on August 10th at Walt Disney Company studios in Burbank, California, where Lovato walked the red carpet alongside the Jonas Brothers and the new generation cast. Lovato has Mexican heritage through her father, Patrick Lovato, a fact she has acknowledged and embraced publicly throughout her career, and her return to a franchise that helped shape Latino representation in mainstream Disney programming carries a meaning the community feels deeply.

What Camp Rock 3 Is About and Who Is in It

The story centers on Connect 3, the beloved fictional band that loses its opening act before a major reunion tour and returns to camp in search of new talent. Liamani Segura and Malachi Barton lead the new generation of campers alongside Lumi Pollack, Sherry Cola, Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, Brooklynn Pitts and Ava Jean. The Jonas Brothers all return in their original roles, with Joe Jonas as Shane Gray, Nick Jonas as Nate Gray and Kevin Jonas as Jason Gray, and Maria Canals-Barrera comes back as Connie, Mitchie’s mother.

Director Veronica Rodriguez described the process as finding the right balance between honoring the original while ensuring the new protagonists had the space to own the film. The script addresses the transition directly, with Mitchie telling her mother that the story is not about her anymore, that it belongs to the new generation of campers and that it is their moment to shine.

The Numbers Behind the Franchise

Camp Rock, which premiered in 2008, became the second most-watched original Disney Channel movie of all time at the time of its release and currently holds third place historically, behind High School Musical 2 and The Wizards of Waverly Place movie. Its sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, was the most-watched film on the channel in 2010.

Together, the two original films have accumulated over 535 million hours of viewing time, and both rank among the top ten most-watched original Disney Channel movies in the network’s history.

Why Lovato’s Return Feels Personal

Lovato’s path back to this role has been anything but straightforward. The years between Camp Rock 2 and Camp Rock 3 encompassed some of the most publicly scrutinized chapters of her life, including health struggles she has spoken about with remarkable honesty and a personal journey she has shared with her fanbase across multiple albums and interviews.

The decision to return as a producer who also appears on screen in a supporting capacity reflects a maturity about what this project is and who it belongs to now, and the fans who grew up with her will recognize that immediately.
