Her angelic voice and captivating features will make you notice her, but it’s Paloma Madi’s fierce determination to create music on her own terms that makes her stand out. The Chilean 19-year-old is adamant about following her gut, and told Billboard she wants to “mark the difference in the music industry and inspire people everywhere.”

Born in New York to Chilean parents, Paloma Mami (whose real name is Paloma Rocío Castillo Astorga) released her independently produced first single “Not Steady” a viral sensation that landed her a deal with Sony Music Latin in 2018.

The rapidly ascending star is a fresh voice who infuses her music with both of her cultural influences. “Living in New York has taught me a lot about the lingo, the way we talk and the attitude,” she explained. “My culture and my roots in Chile have taught me my Latina spice.”

The songstress, who initially appeared on the Chilean singing competition Rojo, stepped onto the music scene without any guidance in the industry. Since then, she’s made a name for herself with melodies she calls a mix of Latin urban R&B with an “elegant flow.”

“‘Not Steady’ is the first song I ever made in my life,” she tells Billboard. “It was the first time I stepped into a studio. My label manager at Sony discovered me in New York thanks to C.Tangana,” she said. “They were both listening to my song in the car.”

After that first single, she’s released two other songs under her record deal with Sony: “No te enamores,” which received over 1 million views on YouTube when it came out, and “Fingías.”

The artist, who looks up to industry giants like Rihanna, Bad Bunny, and Drake, isn’t shy about sharing the big dreams she has for her career. In an interview with We Are Mitú, she spoke about her goals. “I would like to have a lot more people know who I am this year and definitely have more music, more content, out.”

More than anything, Mami Paloma says she owes her success to her own inner moxie: “I just believe in myself. People just know when something is coming or you know things are going to be good for you either way, no matter what happens. Really, I just trusted in my talent.
