Netflix recently released the first official trailer for their upcoming biopic, “Blonde,” starring Ana de Armas. While the production of the film and the story seems engaging, some fans are worried that Marilyn Monroe‘s presence won’t be the same because Ana de Armas does not deliver Marilyn Monroe’s breathy tone in any of the scenes. In the trailer, there is a line delivery where she uses her natural Cuban accent.

Ana de Armas has a positive track record

De Armas is one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood. She has put together a consistent run of good performances in high-budget movies, with even bigger budget casts. She’s starred alongside the likes of Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Christopher Plummer, and so many other on-screen legends. The Cuban-Spanish actress holds her own on screen, which aids in the chemistry with her co-stars.

In the trailer for “Blonde,” we are given a glimpse. We see that the story will cover how Marilyn Monroe struggled behind the scenes. Ana de Armas seems to have captured the vulnerability and glamour of the iconic actress. The trailer features footage in color as well as black-and-white. This means there could possibly be a connection between color and the phases of Monroe’s life, similar to AMC’s “Better Call Saul.”

Should we focus on an engaging portrayal of Monroe instead?

Black-and-white has been an effective choice for the biopic genre, think about Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.”

If “Blonde” can find that same grit and raw portrayal of the character’s life, it should be an engaging story for all Marilyn Monroe fans to enjoy – even if Ana de Armas doesn’t capture the impression of Monroe’s voice to perfection.

It is common in biopics for an actor to try and emulate the person as much as possible. For example, the thumbnail for biopic performances is, in my opinion, hands-down Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln. However, the praise it receives may be because we don’t have the archives of footage as we do of Marilyn Monroe to compare.

Cinema legends are vouching for de Armas

In a film, an actor is painted on a canvas. If the whole project around Ana de Armas is up to par with what we all expect, then there is no reason to have hope for an excellent performance.

Cinema legend Brad Pitt defended Ana de Armas’s performance by saying she did a phenomenal job and all fans should feel secure knowing that the portrayal is in good hands.

Are you looking forward to seeing “Blonde?”
