Karla Sofía Gascón  Puts a Dark Cloud Over ‘Emilia Pérez’

Nominated for Best Actress, the Spanish actress leads Emilia Pérez, a narco-musical that has emerged as a frontrunner with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña. Despite the film’s momentum, Gascón has been absent from the final stretch of the awards season. Controversy surrounding past social media posts — described as xenophobic and racist — placed her at the center of scrutiny.

After the posts resurfaced, Gascón issued a letter of apology, condemning what she called a “campaign of hate and disinformation” that had severely impacted the film’s prospects. She announced her decision to remain silent to avoid further damage, reiterating her apology “to those who have been hurt along the way.”

Netflix distanced itself from Gascón after the backlash, withdrawing support for her travel and styling expenses at industry events. Since then, she has been notably absent from major ceremonies, including Spain’s Goya Awards, the BAFTAs in London, and key Hollywood guild events. Meanwhile, the Emilia Pérez cast has maintained a presence at every major award show, choosing not to address her absence.

Has Her Legacy Been Tarnished?

Karla Sofía Gascón had already made history. The first openly transgender actor nominated for an Oscar, she previously became the first trans woman to win the Best Actress award at Cannes. Her recognition extended to the Golden Globes, where she was the first trans woman nominated for film acting.

The Oscars will now force the industry to confront a lingering question: can controversy overshadow a performance, or does talent outlast the scandal? Gascón’s return places her back under the spotlight, but whether it is one of redemption or rejection will be determined on Hollywood’s biggest night.
