Under the bright lights of Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, Puerto Rico’s undisputed boxing champion, Amanda Serrano, and Irish boxer Katie Taylor stepped into the ring for a rematch destined to make history. What unfolded was a magical night for women’s sport. Before our eyes, this became a cultural milestone as it cemented itself as the most-watched women’s sporting event in history. Netflix reported a staggering 50 million average viewers, proving how women athletes are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

But let’s talk about what went down – and how the Boricua fighter gave everyone her all.

Amanda Serrano Shared Her Strength with the World

For Serrano, the night was about redemption. The Puerto Rican fighter, having lost to Taylor in their 2022 encounter, arrived prepared to assert her dominance. From the opening bell, Serrano delivered a clinic in skill and power, seizing control of the first two rounds and landing a hook in the opener that visibly staggered her Irish opponent. Taylor, however, shifted tactics, employing a risky strategy of leaning in with her head and body to neutralize Serrano’s offense.

By the fourth round, the intensity escalated when an intentional headbutt from Taylor caused a deep cut above Serrano’s eye. Despite the injury, Serrano pressed on with unrelenting determination, a testament to her resilience. The referee deducted a point from Taylor only in the eighth round, long after the repeated infractions had taken their toll.

According to Noticel, the numbers tell the story of Serrano’s dominance. She outpaced Taylor in total punches and landed a remarkable 58.2 percent of her power shots compared to Taylor’s 49.4 percent. The disparity in body shots was even starker: Serrano landed 46 to Taylor’s mere nine. Yet, when the final bell sounded, the judges awarded Taylor a 95-94 victory — a decision that left many confused.

For many, this was a victory that belonged to Serrano. The judges’ decision appeared disconnected from the reality in the ring, leaving a cloud of controversy over a night that otherwise elevated women’s boxing to unprecedented heights. Beyond the result, the fight showcased the unique strength of women athletes and the growing appetite for their place on the grandest stages of sport.

Amanda Serrano may not have left the ring with a win, but her performance affirmed her status as one of boxing’s most formidable competitors. The fight will be remembered for its historic viewership – and it was all thanks to a Latina.

Now, we must wait for Serrano to go against Taylor once again. Third time is the charm as they say.
