In times of crisis, any help counts.

This seems to have been understood by citizens worldwide who, between virtual campaigns and applauses from the balconies, have resorted to any means to try to lend a hand in the face of the public health catastrophe posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

For Johana Hernández, the sewing thread and a machine are her tools of choice.

According to The Downey Patriot, the fashion designer, known for dressing Hollywood Latinx celebrities and founder of GLAUDI, has decided to make safety masks for hospital workers at PIH Health Hospital in Downey, her place of residence, and whose team saved her father’s life after he suffered a heart attack.

Hernández became known in 2013 after participating in NBC’s designer competition series Fashion Star. After winning the FIAT designer campaign, she was mentored by Nicole Richie, according to The Fashion Hero.

She has been considered one of the most influential women in the industry by PEOPLE Magazine, Latina Magazine, and Alegria Magazine.

Born in Compton, California, Hernández grew up around sewing machines used by her parents who sewed for brands such as Guess, Calvin Klein, and Gap.

At 19, The Wall Street Journal featured her first collection.

Since then, she has become a designer for Seven7 Jeans, Isaac Mizrahi Jeans, Elie Tahari, the Hannah Montana, and the Disney licenses.

At 24, Hernández launched her own collection, GLAUDI by Johana Hernández, “specializing in empowering women of all shapes and sizes with bold, elegant styles,” according to her website.

But it’s not just a collection.

GLAUDI is also a fundraising platform to help children in poverty in El Salvador, their parents’ country of origin. In collaboration with other organizations such as Latinos Con Corazon, Hernández has built schools, donated computers to schools and orphanages in Central America.
