Latino Contributions Overshadowed by Negative Campaign Ads

Election years often take the US into a whirlwind of emotions. From selecting the official candidates to following all the communications released by presidential hopefuls, it can be overwhelming.

Voting is a right guaranteed by the United States, and this choice should be respected. However, it is crucial that elected officials from local offices uphold standards that respect everyone involved, including Latinos. Unfortunately, this has not always been the case. In fact, some political ads contain harmful language against Latinos.

The Negative Campaign Ads

There is an ad running in Missouri by Bill Eigel, a gubernatorial candidate, that features an alleged Latino translating Eigel’s message about Latinos being “illegals.” The ad ends with a voiceover saying “andale, andale, la migra.”

The Latino community has not highly accepted the behavior of the Latino in the ad.

James David Vance, whose preferred name is J.D. Vance, also has a past political ad with similar language around Latinos. We must ensure that Latinos are portrayed positively, considering how unsafe it can become if they are not.

Latinos Are Important to the US

Latinos have contributed immensely to the fabric of American society. They are business owners, educators, healthcare workers, and community leaders. Their hard work and dedication have helped build and sustain communities across the country.

The portrayal of Latinos in political ads also affects younger generations. Latino children and teenagers who see these ads may internalize the negative messages, leading to feelings of inferiority and self-doubt. It is crucial to provide positive role models and representations in the media to counteract these harmful narratives. By highlighting the successes and contributions of Latinos, we can foster a sense of pride and belonging in young people.

How anyone votes is up to them. Let’s just hope we all continue to respect each other in the future.
