Nearly two years have passed since footage of Afro-Latina artist, Cardi B, hurling a microphone into the crowd during a beachside performance lit up social media feeds and late-night banter. Yet the moment has returned to the headlines. A woman identified as Jane Doe has filed a lawsuit in Clark County, Nevada, accusing the artist of assault, battery, and negligence stemming from that performance on July 29, 2023, at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas.

Doe claims that what appeared to be an impulsive reaction from the stage resulted in far more than embarrassment. Her lawsuit describes serious emotional distress, humiliation, and physical injury. According to the filing, Cardi B’s actions that evening were excessive and retaliatory. The microphone, she alleges, was thrown with force and without warning, leaving her shaken and injured.

Jane Doe Claims Cardi B Invited Fans to Splash Her

The legal complaint centers on what transpired during Cardi B’s performance of “Bodak Yellow.” With temperatures soaring, the artist reportedly encouraged the crowd to throw water on her to help her cool off. Video recordings from the scene show Cardi making gestures and comments such as “Splash me. That feels good. Throw that sh-t.”

Doe’s legal team asserts that the performer not only invited the interaction but reinforced it through her own actions, pouring water over herself and reacting positively when the crowd obliged. In that context, Doe says she participated in the spirit of the moment by tossing a portion of her drink toward the stage.

What followed, according to the lawsuit, was an abrupt and aggressive response. The artist with Dominican roots is seen throwing her microphone into the audience, striking Doe directly. Doe’s attorneys argue that the artist should have recognized the risk of injury involved in such an act and contend that the reaction was neither proportional nor reasonable.

Fallout and Legal Claims

The lawsuit outlines the aftermath in detail. Doe alleges she has endured ongoing physical pain, emotional trauma, and reputational damage since the incident. Her filing also references a wave of public scrutiny, fueled in part by media coverage and the viral nature of the video.

Adding to the surreal aftermath, the very microphone that struck her was later sold on eBay for over 90,000 euros. The seller described it as “the microphone seen flying across the country after Cardi was splashed with a little liquid.” Proceeds from the sale were reportedly directed to charity, but the gesture did little to soothe the tension surrounding the event.

Cardi B, speaking from the stage immediately after the incident, offered a brash justification that quickly circulated online: “I said splash my p—y, not my face, b—h.”

Responses Are Coming Out

In a public statement, Cardi B’s attorney Drew Findling dismissed the lawsuit as a “financial shakedown.” He pointed out that law enforcement closed the case due to insufficient evidence. Nonetheless, Doe’s legal team insists the issue remains unresolved and worthy of civil accountability.

Doe, through a statement to People, described the experience as life-altering. “What many have written off as a joke was, in truth, a traumatic event that impacted my well-being and quality of life. I seek justice not to gain attention, but to affirm that no celebrity is above the law.”

An Ongoing Conversation

The incident now extends beyond the stage, entering a legal space where performance and responsibility are weighed together. The complaint asks whether a star’s reaction during a show can carry consequences offstage.

That question, no longer confined to social media, will be tested in court.
