Live like a ‘Poderosa’

Live like a 'Poderosa'

Every Latin American country has a different word to describe gutsy women. For example, a commonly used mentality is to live life like a poderosa meaning an empowered, strong woman.

It’s incredible how many beautiful words exist to describe all the amazing mujeres in our lives. But why are Latinas considered so great?

From the abuelas who lovingly passed down family traditions to the mothers who tirelessly advocate for their children’s education, Latinas have always been at the forefront of leading by example. This includes modeling the importance of investing in your health with quality nutrition. This is especially important when it comes to preventing or managing chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, which impact our community the most.  We can take pride in knowing Latinas consistently demonstrate the importance of making smart choices for the next generation. As we know, knowledge is power and being aware of reoccurring familial health conditions can be key to a preventative approach. However, gaining some of that confidence is in remembering that some cultures have alarming statistics – like that of type 2 diabetes within the Latino communities

According to the CDC, Hispanic or Latino adults have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to the general population. With a chance of more than 50 percent, it’s essential for Latinas to take proactive steps to support their own health and of their families.

For people with diabetes, it’s important to limit foods containing sugar, salt and saturated fats and prioritize eating foods with heart-healthy fats, like those found in avocado.
