María Corina Machado, leader of Venezuela’s opposition alliance, has initiated a transparency effort following the controversial presidential election. On her X account, Machado shared a link to a platform where citizens can verify the voting records from each polling station.

This move comes in response to the CNE’s official declaration of Nicolás Maduro’s victory with 51.2 percent of the vote, a result challenged by allegations of electoral fraud. Machado contends that the records they have — representing 73.2 percent of the votes — indicate a clear victory for their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia.

The announcement from the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Sunday evening declared Maduro’s re-election based on the alleged results from 80 percent of the ballots, with over two million votes still pending count. This declaration, however, has been met with significant skepticism. Many critics accuse the regime of orchestrating a fraudulent election process designed to extend Maduro’s presidency until 2031.

The allegations of electoral misconduct have led to widespread civil unrest across Venezuela. Spontaneous protests erupted in various cities, resulting in severe confrontations between demonstrators and authorities. The violence has tragically claimed lives, with reports confirming at least two deaths.

How to Access the Website Created by María Corina Machado

In an attempt to provide clarity and counteract the claims of fraud, Machado’s transparency initiative has faced technical challenges. The link to the verification website was quickly overwhelmed by high traffic, leading to accessibility issues. Machado has assured the public that technical teams are working diligently to restore access to the platform, emphasizing the importance of allowing Venezuelans to verify their votes.

Machado’s initiative highlights the broader struggle for democratic integrity in Venezuela. As global leaders and international observers scrutinize the election results, the tension between the opposition and the ruling regime continues to intensify. The situation reflects the deep political divisions within Venezuela and underscores the ongoing battle for a transparent and fair electoral process. The outcome of this confrontation may have significant implications for the country’s future and its democratic institutions.
