Mexico Escapes Worst of Hurricane Milton as U.S. Prepares for Impact

After going through Mexico, Hurricane Milton continues its relentless path toward the United States. The storm, which initially hit the Mexican coast, has continued to act erratically, but authorities remain on high alert as it is projected to strike Florida by Thursday. Despite its unpredictability, Milton has already caused significant disruptions across several states in Mexico, with its outer bands continuing to wreak havoc on the Yucatán Peninsula.

The Aftermath of the Hurricane in Mexico

In a press conference early Tuesday, Mexico’s national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez Alzúa, and Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena reassured the public that emergency plans remain active and praised the swift response from local authorities.  While the storm avoided a direct hit on the Yucatán coast, its powerful winds and torrential rain have led to widespread damage.

#milton #huracan #yucatan #mexico #clima

Coastal areas have seen waves of up to nine feet, especially in Yucatán, where electricity outages affected over 7,000 residents, though power has already been restored to 40 percent of those impacted. Towns like Celestún, Telchac, and Puerto Sisal reported fallen trees, downed power lines, and minor flooding, while four fishermen remain missing off the coast of Puerto Progreso. Nevertheless, officials have credited the region’s preparedness and preventive measures with minimizing casualties, as evacuation orders were effectively carried out in high-risk areas.

Elsewhere, in Campeche, authorities reported 81 damage incidents, including power cuts, fallen trees, and storm surges. Over 300 people were evacuated from Isla Arena, which suffered from flooding as sea waters inundated homes. The state’s governor has urged residents to stay sheltered, as strong winds and rain persist across the region. In Quintana Roo, officials have placed Holbox and surrounding areas on high alert, with schools closed and shelters set up as a precaution against the storm’s continued threats.

Hurricane Milton Is Not Done Yet

Even as Milton moves further north, its impact is still being felt across Latin America. Strong winds lashed the coast of Veracruz on Tuesday morning, while Campeche and Quintana Roo brace for waves of up to 26 feet and the potential formation of waterspouts along the coastline.

The storm’s next target appears to be the Gulf Coast of Florida, where it is expected to hit on Thursday. U.S. officials are already warning residents to prepare for what could be a devastating storm as Milton gains strength once again over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. All eyes are now on the hurricane’s trajectory as it moves northward, poised to leave a trail of destruction in its wake.
