If you live in Los Angeles, California, we’ve got news for you! The L.A. non-profit organization, It’s Bigger Than Us, partnered up with the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping center to host their third annual “Back 2 School” event and giveaway. This year, the event will give away 5,000 Adidas backpacks and school supplies for students K-12, as well as provide family-friendly activities and resources to improve the overall well-being of our community.

“With IBTU (It’s Bigger Than Us) being centered around health equity and community activations, this year’s Back 2 School is an accumulation of all the incredible events we put on for the South Los Angeles community such as our weekly food and resource distribution, health fairs, panel discussions, job fairs and so much more,” the IBTU CEO and founder, Tyrone Nance, said in a press statement.

He continued: “IBTU is a one-stop shop for all things community and at the heart of the work that we do is the voice and trust of the community. IBTU is built around working alongside partners to achieve goals of unity.”

Regarding this year’s partnership with the popular Baldwin Hills Crenshaw, Nance said that the mall meant “everything” to him while growing up. “All of my childhood was spent hanging out at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw shopping, eating, and going to the movie theater with friends and family to now be able to host IBTU’s 3rd Annual Back 2 School event here is a dream.”

The event will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The agenda is divided into three parts. Part one starts from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for “Volunteer Assembly Set-Up,” where volunteers will be putting together 1,750 elementary school backpacks, 1,500 middle school backpacks, and 1,750 high school backpacks.

The “Main Event” (part two) starts from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. During the main event, the 5,000 backpacks and school supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There will also be designated resource stations set up for students, families, and friends. These stations include a job fair, health and resources, youth activities, free haircuts, and early school registration. In addition, panel discussions will be held to discuss Voter and Civic Engagement, Integrated Health: Navigating community health equity barriers, tech and modern careers, and education.

The “Entertainment” portion (part three) starts from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. During this time, there will be live music and entertainment. They will also be holding the 2022 IBTU Bridge Builder Honoree Award Ceremony and presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to Lafayette Dorsey Sr.
