Oscar De La Hoya Slams Canelo for Playing It ‘Safe’ in the Ring In His Latest Fight

Canelo and De La Hoya Had a Heated Exchange This Week – And There Are A Lot of Feelings Around It

The punches no longer land in the ring but Oscar De La Hoya still knows how to throw them. His latest jab followed Canelo Álvarez’s unanimous decision victory over William Scull in Riyadh. The fight failed to impress. It also delivered something De La Hoya has come to expect from his former protégé — evasion.

De La Hoya watched from afar as the Mexican star added another belt to become undisputed champion. Scull, the Cuban underdog, claimed he had done enough to win. Álvarez moved efficiently, but never risked much. For De La Hoya, that was the problem.

“They pay you all this money to fight a runner that we all knew was going to run, Cuban style. You chose him, and now you say you hate fighting runners,” he said, cutting straight into Canelo’s own post-fight complaints.

But this was not only about Riyadh. The fight was followed by the official announcement of Álvarez’s next bout — a showdown with Terence Crawford, scheduled for September 12 in Las Vegas. That fight will take place under the banner of TKO, the new venture backed by Turki Alalshikh and UFC’s Dana White. De La Hoya did not miss the irony.

For him, this was less a comeback and more of a calculated display. “He only did what was necessary,” De La Hoya said. “A show would have meant trying to catch him. That didn’t happen. It was all about arriving with those belts to the Crawford fight.”

Benavidez Remains the Fight That Will Not Go Away and Oscar De La Hoya Knows It

More than belts, De La Hoya wants to see a fight that puts Álvarez against real danger. He has said it before and he said it again after the bout. The name has not changed.

“We all know who we want to see you win against,” De La Hoya said. “That’s Benavidez. Face Benavidez, fight Benavidez. He won’t run away. What’s wrong with that?”

To De La Hoya, Canelo keeps choosing paths that avoid the one fighter whose style might push him past what is necessary. Álvarez has done everything, but there remains an unfinished conversation with David Benavidez. And De La Hoya, though now firmly on the outside, keeps making sure it stays open.

“You know, it also starts from the top,” he added. The tone was familiar. The relationship may be broken, but the obsession is mutual. Canelo still commands the sport. De La Hoya still circles him. Both remain within reach of each other, if not physically, then always through words.
