A video has surfaced showing a young man celebrating his birthday with a cake featuring the image of George Floyd. The footage, which has amassed millions of views on social media, captures the celebrant, identified by local media as Daniel Elías Injoque Zugbi, along with others, mockingly repeating Floyd’s last words, “I can’t breathe.” The video, recorded two years ago, is now getting a lot of criticism. At the time of its recording, Injoque Zugbi was a law student at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).

Consequences Exist for Mocking George Floyd

The university swiftly condemned the incident, stating in an official release: “During a private celebration, the violent death of U.S. citizen George Floyd was mocked. We strongly reject all manifestations of hatred, racism, and any form of discrimination.”

Floyd’s tragic death in 2020, following an encounter with police after allegedly attempting to use a counterfeit $20 bill, led to global protests against racial injustice. The disturbing footage of his arrest, where a police officer kneeled on Floyd’s neck as he repeatedly gasped “I can’t breathe” before losing consciousness, became a catalyst for worldwide outrage.

In response to the video, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture released its own statement, confirming that it had filed a formal complaint with the national prosecutor’s office. The legal firm where Injoque Zugbi was reportedly employed issued a strong condemnation of his actions, announcing that he and another individual involved in the video had been dismissed.

The firm also explained its connection to the incident: “The video caught our attention as two students from the Catholic University, who began their internships with us six months and a year ago, were present at the party,” the statement noted. In their response, they further expressed their categorical rejection of any actions undermining human dignity.

The fallout from the video has intensified the conversation about racial sensitivity in Peru, with many calling for accountability and justice. For now, the legal and social consequences for those involved remain to be seen.
