Privada, the Latino App That Wants to Be the Yelp of Party Planning, Was Built by a Truck Driver Who Sold His Car to Make It Happen

Cristian Moreno is a 28-year-old truck driver, corrido composer and singer in a group called Los Double M, and he is also the person behind Privada, a new app that wants to do for Latino party planning what Yelp did for restaurant discovery. The idea came to him during a gig, when a client who had hired his group started asking if he knew any taco vendors or party organizers. That question planted something he could not let go of, and the result is an application now available on iPhone and Android that connects people planning events with nearly 3,000 businesses across the United States and in countries including Mexico.

Moreno built this without a technology degree, without a startup background and without the kind of financial cushion that most app developers take for granted. He sold his car to cover the costs of bringing Privada to life, and he recently cut his trucking hours to half time so he could focus on improving it.

The Idea Behind the Privada App

The premise of Privada is straightforward: one place to find everything a party needs, whether that is a musical group, a photographer, a taco service, makeup artists, hair stylists, chair rentals or decorations. According to Latido Beat, Moreno describes it as Yelp for Latino parties, a single destination where event planners and families can browse, compare and contact service providers without having to search across multiple platforms or rely on word of mouth alone.

Every business listed on the app can include contact information, social media profiles and videos showcasing their services. The listing is currently free for any business that wants to join, and Moreno has said there will always be a free way to participate even as he considers introducing premium membership packages in the future.

He built the concept around something he observed directly in his own community. Latinos celebrate everything, he said, and he felt strongly that there should be one place that brought together all the services those celebrations require. The app is designed to serve both the people looking for vendors and the vendors themselves, giving smaller businesses a platform to reach clients outside their existing networks without paying for advertising.

A Latino Developer in an Industry That Barely Reflects the Community

Moreno attended community college for two years but did not study technology, and he has spent the last six years writing corridos while working as a truck driver. He is building something in an industry where his community has an extremely thin presence.

A TikTok video he posted about Privada reached over 400,000 views and was shared over 17,000 times, giving the app a visibility that no marketing budget had produced and that reflected genuine interest from a community that recognized something it had been missing. Moreno has been direct about the difficulty of the path he is on, saying that many of his previous ideas have failed and that failure is part of the process.

Why the Timing Matters for Latino Service Businesses

Privada is launching at a moment when the businesses it serves are under considerable economic pressure. Party service vendors, musicians, caterers and event suppliers were among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently they have felt the impact of increased immigration enforcement activity.

Moreno sees Privada as a practical tool for those businesses to stabilize and expand their client base by reaching people outside their immediate circles. Many vendors already have loyal customers, he said, but the app helps them grow beyond the networks they already know. For a community of service providers that has absorbed significant economic disruption in recent years, a free platform that increases visibility without adding costs is a resource that arrives at exactly the right moment.
