BELatina’s Weekend Recap: Bad Bunny Wraps Up Tour, Casa Ruby Removed From Latino Museum, and More belatina latine

Happy Monday, everyone!

Who’s already eating traditional holiday food? Is there dancing involved? We hope so. We all deserve to celebrate the holidays as long as possible considering how wild this year was – for what it seems – for a lot of people.

However, as we get situated with the celebrations, it’s still important to know what’s going on in our community. Though we understand that many of you take the weekend to decompress, we must check out what happened these past few days.

From Gabriela Berlingeri singing at Bad Bunny’s concert to Puerto Rico receiving the first gold medal in the 2022’s Pismo Beach ISA World Para Surfing Championship, there’s plenty to talk about today.

Let’s get to it!

First surfing championship medal awarded to Puerto Rico

Alelí Medina, 13, won the gold medal in the Pismo Beach ISA World Para Surfing Championship. This is the first in Puerto Rico’s history to win this prestigious award. May Alelí see more success in the years to come!

After giving the world two back-to-back tours, el Conejo Malo is hanging his heart-shaped microphone for some much-deserved rest. Bad Bunny wrapped up his tour in the Azteca Stadium, the largest stadium in Mexico and Latin America. Benito sang in front of about 85,000 attendees during the weekend in Mexico. He paid homage to Juan Gabriel, brought out many notable guests such as Bomba Estéreo and Chencho Corleone, and had an after-party at a local Mexican club once he ended his last show. There’s no denying that this tour is one for the books.

Latino Museum removes Casa Ruby content

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino seemingly cut ties with Ruby Corado by removing content featuring Casa Ruby, a nonprofit that provided shelter and transitional housing to LGBTQ youth in the District (which is currently temporarily closed.) Corado was recently sued by D.C.’s Attorney General Karl Racine for allegedly stealing money from the LGBTQ+ nonprofit organization.

A spokesperson for the Museum of the American Latino told DCist/WAMU that the videos were removed in September because the museum did not want to be affiliated with an individual under investigation by the D.C. Attorney General.

The content removed included videos in an interactive display featuring Latino pioneers in the exhibit, ¡Presente!.

Gabriela Berlingeri, who hadn’t appeared on stage since Bad Bunny’s concert in Puerto Rico, took to the stage again. She sang her hook in ‘El Apagón,’ a song about Puerto Rico’s constant blackouts and Bad Bunny’s love for Puerto Rico. Fans were pleasantly surprised to see her make an appearance considering rumors stating that both she and Benito are no longer in a relationship. However, Benito has previously claimed that they are “besties,” so there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between them. Berlingeri’s part in the song urges modern-day colonizers to leave the island.
