Spanish production company Buendía Estudios announced on Wednesday that it is preparing both a documentary and a series about the singer Rocío Dúrcal in collaboration with Sony Music México, expanding on a film project revealed last year.

A Major Announcement for the Legacy of Rocío Dúrcal

The reveal was first made public during a panel at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, described as the largest industry gathering for the Ibero-American audiovisual world. In its statement, the production company declared, “We have announced the development and production of a fiction series and a documentary series dedicated to Rocío Dúrcal: an icon that transcends generations.” No further details were shared at the time, but the announcement was quickly amplified across social media.

These upcoming works build on the 2024 announcement of a film that will explore her life and career two decades after her death. According to the producers, the film intends to examine her musical achievements, her influence on Latin American soundscapes, and her deep ties to regional Mexican music.

A Career That Crossed Borders

Rocío Dúrcal, born in 1944 in Spain, first rose to prominence in her home country as a film and music star. Yet it was in Mexico where she forged an enduring bond with audiences and built a career that spanned decades. Her collaborations with songwriter Juan Gabriel produced enduring classics such as Costumbres, Amor eterno, and Fue un placer conocerte. These songs cemented her as one of the most beloved interpreters of rancheras and boleros, genres that she helped popularize across generations.

Sony Music executives, in their earlier announcement, described the forthcoming productions as an effort to “rescue her extraordinary career, her impact on Latin music and the role she played in the popularization of rancheras and boleros.” Their framing reflects how Dúrcal’s artistry carried cultural weight in Spain and across Latin America, uniting audiences with songs that continue to be sung in homes, concerts, and family gatherings.

Recognition and Achievements

Her career brought formal accolades alongside popular devotion. She received a Latin Grammy for Musical Excellence in 2005, in addition to three further nominations at that ceremony and three nominations at the Grammy Awards. The singer also starred in over twenty films, released dozens of albums, and reached a global tally of more than 11 billion audio and video streams.

Her album sales surpassed forty million, underscoring the breadth of her appeal in both Spanish-speaking markets and international stages.

Remembering Rocío Dúrcal

Nearly twenty years after her passing in 2006, interest in Rocío Dúrcal’s life and artistry shows no signs of fading. The combined efforts of Buendía Estudios, Sony Music México, and other collaborators suggest a renewed cultural investment in making her story accessible to a new audience. Whether through film, documentary, or scripted series, these projects intend to revisit a career that shaped the sound of Latin music in the twentieth century.
