Selena Gomez rarely shies away from difficult conversations, but her latest Instagram post placed her at the center of a politically charged storm.

A brief video shared to her Instagram Stories showed the singer and actress in tears, visibly shaken by the wave of deportations targeting Mexicans in the United States. Accompanying the clip was a simple message: the Mexican flag and the wordsI’m sorry”.

Selena Gomez Shares the Pain of Many Latinos

The video disappeared within minutes, but not before it was recorded and widely circulated across social media. Criticism arrived swiftly. Some questioned why Gomez, whose father is of Mexican descent, had involved herself in the issue. Others accused her of performative activism. Shortly after, she posted another message: “Apparently, it’s not okay to show empathy for people.” That, too, was quickly deleted.

The controversy comes as mass deportations accelerate under the 47th U.S. president, kept his campaign promises to expel undocumented immigrants. Since taking office, his administration has intensified immigration enforcement. Thus, the immigrant community, especially within the Latino population, are currently living in fear across the country. After all, families have been separated, and lives have been uprooted pretty much overnight.

Gomez, whose work in the film Emilia Pérez has already stirred debate, now finds herself in the crosshairs once more. The movie, which explores themes of cartel violence and disappearances in Mexico, has drawn scrutiny over her involvement. Critics argue that her Spanish pronunciation betrays a disconnect from the culture the film portrays. Others question whether she should be engaging with the complex realities of a country she has never called home.

Gomez’s fleeting posts may have vanished, but the questions they raise remain. Was she unprepared for the scrutiny that comes with speaking out, or did she underestimate the political minefield she was stepping into? Empathy alone does not shield public figures from criticism, especially when their connection to an issue is debated. Yet, her tears are shared by many Latinos who are facing this reality in silence.
