Selena Gomez speaks often of the unique bond she shares with her mother, Mandy Teefey, who became a parent at just 16. In an interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Gomez reflected on their shared journey, likening it to “growing up together.” She drew parallels to Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal of a young mother in Blitz, noting how her own upbringing was shaped by a relationship of mutual support. “My mom and I supported each other from the beginning,” Gomez said, describing how Mandy played the role of both guide and friend, particularly during the most challenging points of her career.

Gomez shared a memory of her mother’s wisdom when she was 16 and preparing for a premiere. “You can have fun, but then you go home,” Mandy told her. Gomez credits this dynamic as essential to her well-being, describing it as reminiscent of the mother-daughter duo in Gilmore Girls.

Mandy’s own story is as impactful. Growing up in a neighborhood marked by violence, she vowed to build a better life for her child. In a 2017 interview, Teefey recalled the moment she realized her circumstances had to change: “I had someone depending on me. I had to get serious.” Despite facing judgment as a teenage mother, she made sacrifices to ensure Gomez had opportunities she never did.

Motherhood On-Screen

Gomez’s reflections on family extend to her work. In Emilia Pérez, she steps into the role of Jessi, a woman married to a Mexican drug lord, navigating personal and societal upheaval. Speaking of the experience, Gomez described portraying a mother as “sweet” but admitted she found it daunting. “There’s something so brave about children,” she said, a sentiment that added emotional depth to her performance. The film represents her willingness to explore challenging roles that demand both vulnerability and strength.

Awards and Personal Milestones

December brought recognition and celebration for Gomez. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Emilia Pérez and a nod for her role in Only Murders in the Building. Sharing her gratitude online, she expressed pride in her co-star Zoe Saldaña’s nomination, calling the experience an honor.

Her personal life also reached a joyful milestone. Gomez announced her engagement to music producer Benny Blanco with an Instagram post showcasing her engagement ring and the caption, “The eternity begins now.” The couple, who started dating in mid-2023, first collaborated in 2019 on the song “I Can’t Get Enough.” Blanco responded with a playful comment, “Wait, that’s my wife!”

Selena Gomez moves through life as a woman rooted in her past but unafraid to embrace the future. She inspires many women, including Latinas, so she must be doing right.
