Shakira has a hot take on the widely acclaimed film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig. In a recent Allure profile and cover story, she offered candid insights to the feminist movie – and some are shocked at her revelations.

During the interview, Shakira, whose new album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” explores themes of empowerment and resilience, did not hold back in expressing her thoughts. She explained, “My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent.” The Latina pop icon said her desire for her sons to feel empowered while also respecting women, without compromising their own masculinity, was important.

Shakira also stated: “I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.” She emphasized the importance of recognizing the distinct roles of men and women in society. Though this mindset might seem archaic to progressive types, there is an audience for this – especially within the Latino community.

Despite Shakira’s reservations about “Barbie,” the film achieved significant success, becoming the first movie directed solely by a woman to gross over $1 billion and receiving eight Oscar nominations. Also, America Ferrera, a badass Latina, received several nominations for her role in Barbie.

What Is Shakira Up to Now?

It is evident that Shakira’s newfound independence following her split from longtime partner Gerard Piqué has shaped her outlook on empowerment.

Reflecting on her journey during her Allure interview, Shakira described herself as “reborn as a woman” after navigating through personal challenges. With her latest album serving as an emotional outlet, Shakira has embraced her autonomy, emphasizing her right to define her own path and raise her children on her terms.

While the Oscar-winning movie has garnered praise from many celebrities, Shakira should be allowed to have differing opinions. After all, she’s voicing this from her maternal side.
