Google’s annual list of the most searched people, artists, songs, and cultural trends for 2023 is out, and it’s no surprise that Shakira reigns as the most searched artist globally this year. The Colombian singer had a busy year, marked by numerous awards and hit songs like “Acróstico” and “El jefe” with Fuerza Regida, the latter targeting her ex, Gerard Piqué, who decided to fumble the bag and leave her for a Casio.

How did this happen though? Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. For starters, her triumph at this year’s Latin Grammys, where she bagged three awards, including the Song of the Year alongside Argentinian producer Bizarrap for their post-breakup anthem “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” led her to the top of Google’s searches.

The track “TQG,” a collaboration with Karol G, also emerged as the third most searched news item related to her name. This song skyrocketed to become the most-watched YouTube song of 2023, amassing over 800 million views.

Shakira’s collaboration, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” with Bizarrap claimed the third spot among Google’s most searched songs for 2023. Their powerful performance on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in March amplified the track’s popularity as well.

The Year of Shakira, According to Google

Shakira’s trend domination extended across various countries, making her a hot topic in Cuba, Paraguay, Spain, Colombia, and Bolivia. She clinched the number one spot in Italy, Portugal, and Peru, landed at number two in Mexico and Switzerland, and secured third and fourth positions in Argentina and Brazil, respectively. She’s a global Latina queen – and we are here for it!

However, Shakira’s year wasn’t devoid of controversy. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer faced allegations of tax fraud in Spain. Although she settled the case, it was still a mess for her – and it contributed to plenty of Google searches.

Nevertheless, this Latina icon’s journey to the top of Google’s search results showcases her eventful year.

Do you think a Latina will be at the top of the list next year?
