Sofía Niño de Rivera, a standout Latina comedian, never settled for playing by the rules. She left a career in advertising after realizing that her ideas were often filtered before they ever reached the public. Stand-up comedy offered an alternative — no middlemen, no approvals — just a microphone, an audience, and the sharp observational humor that has earned her recognition as one of Mexico’s top comedians.

“I still love good advertising, but my frustration at the time led me to try out stand-up after seeing it for the first time in New York,” Niño de Rivera told BELatina in an exclusive interview. “My inspiration came from therapy, the absurdity of everyday life, and the desire to not take anything too seriously.”

Sofía Niño de Rivera Is Breaking Barriers in Comedy

Growing up, Niño de Rivera had no Latina comedy icons to admire. But rather than seeing this as a setback, she saw an opportunity. It drove her to become the person she wished she had seen on stage. “Representation matters, and if you don’t see it, you have to create it.”

Comedy has never been an easy space for women, and being a Latina comedian adds another layer of challenge. “Being a woman and Latina in comedy is like playing Mario Bros on hard mode. But at least the obstacles make for great material,” she quips. She has always refused to be boxed into the stereotype of the “female comedian” who only discusses relationships. “The hardest part at the beginning was to earn a place without having to fit into the mold of the ‘female comedian’ who only talked about relationships. I talk about politics, motherhood, Mexican society — whatever I feel like.”

And despite the challenges, she has continuously proved that women can own the stage, defy expectations, and make audiences laugh along the way.

When Comedy Meets Connection

As Niño de Rivera’s career grows, so do her opportunities for collaboration. She recently teamed up with Verizon for a campaign focused on connecting families. “Partnering with Verizon was an easy decision for me. They’re all about connecting people with what they love, and I am all about making people laugh.” The ad showcases the humor found in a busy Latino household, emphasizing how upgrading old phones can help families stay connected without breaking the bank. “Especially moms — they deserve all the ‘me time’ they can get.”

Throughout her career, authenticity has been her driving force. Whether on stage, in front of a camera, or collaborating with brands, she brings the same sharp wit and honesty that built her reputation.

Looking Ahead

Niño de Rivera shows no signs of slowing down. A European tour is in the works, along with new projects aimed at using comedy as a tool for transformation. “After Libre de Reír, I am constantly exploring ways to keep using comedy as a tool for transformation. I’ll soon announce a new project with that intention.”

For Latinas aspiring to break into comedy, Niño de Rivera offers direct, empowering advice: “Do it. Don’t ask for permission. Don’t wait for an invitation. Put on your sneakers, write your jokes, get on that stage, and speak your truth. If you can make people laugh by being yourself, you’ve already won.”

Laughter remains a powerful force for change, and Sofía Niño de Rivera is wielding it like no other.
