Nine months after the death of Abraham Quintanilla, the patriarch who guarded Selena’s legacy for three decades, the family he left behind is fracturing publicly in a way that is difficult to watch. A.B. Quintanilla III confirmed earlier this week that he has filed a legal action against his sister Suzette Quintanilla involving alleged irregularities in the administration of royalties tied to Selena’s estate, and Suzette and their mother Marcella Quintanilla responded with a formal statement of their own. A.B. then responded to that response, uploading what he described as documentary proof of his claims and accusing Suzette of using their mother as a shield in a dispute she was fully aware of. The situation is moving fast and the details are getting more specific with every statement.

A.B.’s Allegations and What He Claims to Have Documented

A.B. Quintanilla’s original statement described years of accumulated situations that he chose to stay silent about out of respect and family loyalty before concluding that silence was no longer possible. He alleged irregularities exceeding $48 million dollars in the administration of royalties, questioned the transparency of Q Productions’ financial records and accused Suzette of attempting to negotiate the Selena legacy for approximately $30 million without his knowledge or consent. He said he needs a full audit of Q Productions’ accounts to clarify how the royalties have been handled.

After Suzette and Marcella released their response denying knowledge of any lawsuit, A.B. fired back on Instagram the same day, stating plainly that he does not lie and that Suzette and her attorneys were notified of the legal action through certified mail and email. He clarified that the action relates to her fiduciary duties, meaning her legal obligations to act with loyalty, transparency and in the interest of those whose assets she was responsible for managing. He also uploaded an image of a legal document that he says shows correspondence between his legal team and Suzette’s attorney, in which his lawyers describe Suzette’s alleged refusal to produce contracts, documentation and financial information as revealing her absolute disregard for her fiduciary duties toward the beneficiaries of the estate. He added that Suzette responded to the initial request but did not deliver what was being asked of her, leaving those fundamental requirements unanswered. He also accused her of using their mother by convenience, saying Marcella was completely unaware of the situations occurring around her and never had any involvement in any of it.

Suzette and Marcella’s Response

Suzette and Marcella’s joint statement, published on the official Selena Instagram account, pushed back on every element of A.B.’s claims. They stated that Suzette was never formally notified of any lawsuit, that they searched available public records and could not locate any filed case matching A.B.’s description and asked him to share the case number. They denied that Suzette stole, misappropriated or improperly took any money or assets belonging to A.B., Marcella, Chris, Selena’s estate or any family-owned or jointly held company. They also stated that Suzette is not selling and has no intention of selling Selena’s personal belongings, clarifying that any possible sale of a stake in a company is an entirely different matter that should not be misrepresented as the sale of Selena’s personal items.

On the question of Abraham, they said they have no knowledge of any misconduct on his part that would support what A.B. appears to be implying about their father, and asked A.B. to present the evidence he says he has, for both his sister and their father, while asking that he respect Abraham’s memory. They closed by saying they love A.B. as their son and brother but that loving someone does not mean accepting false accusations or staying silent while Suzette’s reputation, Abraham’s memory and the family name are called into question. They stated their intention to continue protecting their family, Abraham’s memory, Selena’s legacy and the truth.

What Comes Next

A.B. Quintanilla announced that his attorney will release a formal statement on Friday, September 4th, promising that many things will be clarified at that point. The dispute is currently playing out across social media statements, uploaded legal documents and competing claims about whether notification was properly given and whether a publicly accessible case exists. The underlying questions about the administration of Selena’s estate, who has had access to the royalties it generates and whether those royalties have been properly accounted for will likely become clearer once the legal record becomes fully public. The Quintanilla family spent thirty years presenting a united front around one of the most beloved names in Latin music history, but it is now having one of the most consequential arguments of its life in public. For the sake of Selena’s legacy, let’s hope everything gets resolved soon.
