A wave of TikTok videos is flooding social media, each one a quiet act of defiance. Children play in backyards, families celebrate milestones, workers move through their day, and graduates beam with pride. Over each clip, the phrase “This is the dangerous alien” appears, which is a sharp counter to the rhetoric that casts immigrants as threats.

Why the ‘Dangerous Alien’ TikTok Trend Is Dangerous

More than a trend, “Dangerous Alien” is a response to fear, a show of unity, and a reminder of the human stories behind immigration. But in the rush to uplift undocumented loved ones, many are unknowingly putting them in danger.

Let’s remember that federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), are not just watching — they are adapting. Social media has long been a tool for law enforcement, with ICE using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and now TikTok to track, locate, and even detain undocumented individuals. Think about it. Now, a heartfelt video meant to challenge stereotypes can also serve as a roadmap for officials looking to build cases or plan raids. Sadly, the same internet that bridges communities can also expose it.

Practice Online Safety

With immigration policies tightening and deportation fears rising, online safety is not optional. Supporting undocumented family members in public spaces like social media must be done with care.

Here are ways to stay safe while standing in solidarity:

Limit Identifying Information

Avoid using real names, locations, workplace details, or school affiliations. Even a single frame showing a street sign or business logo can be enough for someone to track a location.

Adjust Privacy Settings

Keep videos within private circles or restricted to friends. If posting publicly, disable location tracking and be mindful of followers who may not have good intentions.

Blur Faces and Identifiable Features

While the message is powerful, the safety of those featured should come first. Use editing tools to blur faces, tattoos, or any unique identifiers.

Think Before Tagging

Tagging family members, friends, or locations increases digital footprints. If someone is undocumented, refrain from connecting them to posts that could compromise their security.

Know Your Rights

ICE cannot enter a home without a warrant signed by a judge. If agents show up, ask to see documentation before opening the door. Memorize legal hotlines that provide immediate assistance.

Be Mindful of Your Online Activism

The power of “Dangerous Alien” lies in its ability to reclaim a narrative, but that power should not come at the cost of safety. Online activism is only as strong as the precautions taken to protect those at risk.

Yes, support can still thrive, but just with the awareness that in this digital landscape, exposure can be a weapon too.
