BELatina’s Weekend Recap: Gordita Chronicles, Bad Bunny, and More

BELatina's Weekend Recap: Gordita Chronicles, Bad Bunny, and More belatina news

It’s the first Monday of August and, somehow, we are only 4 months away from 2023. Is it me, or did years used to last longer before? Now they speed by leaving us despelucadxs (messy-haired) and disoriented from its force.

As we begin this week, let’s take a look at what happened during the weekend. Though Bad Bunny made many people’s last few days bearable, there are pressing issues – some were mentioned during his concert – we need to be aware of, even if it doesn’t create the best moods.

After all, it can’t all be fun and games.

Aside from the Caribbean-filled feeds many of us scrolled through this past weekend, let’s not forget “Gordita Chronicles” tragic fate – at least for the time being.

There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

‘Gordita Chronicles’ Can Now Be Picked Up by Other Networks

HBO Max didn’t give ‘Gordita Chronicles’ a chance to continue their impeccable storyline for a second season. The comedy series, which tells the story of an immigrant, Latinx family living in the United States, was axed from the network because it’s pulling back on live-action kids and family programming.

An HBO Max spokesperson told Deadline that, “live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future, and as a result, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to end Gordita Chronicles at HBO Max.”

“The series earned critical acclaim and a loyal following, and we are proud to have worked with creator Claudia Forestieri and our two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria — who also masterfully directed the pilot — and Zoe Saldaña, to bring Cucu’s journey to the screen.

This is another blow to having authentic Latinx representation in the entertainment industry. Ser Anzoategui tweeted about the irony of keeping Latinx voices out of these spaces.

We can all hope “Gordita Chronicles” is picked up by another network as “One Day at a Time” once was. The series was led by its creator Claudia Forestieri and its two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria and Zoe Saldaña.

This past Sunday, the Lancaster County fair in Lincoln, Nebraska showcased Latino culture on its stage for the first time ever; the fair is over 150 years old.

“This is the first year that we are here at the Lancaster Fair. So hopefully this grows every year and evolves into something bigger. Where we can have bigger bands, bigger performances and have a bigger crowd,” Steve Solorio, the event organizer, told KLKN-TV.

The crowd was able to enjoy local and popular Latino music.

SOOO much happened at Bad Bunny’s concerts, which is why he is being mentioned this Monday. During one of his concerts, the owner of the Cangrejeros de Santurce, urged his fans to help keep Puerto Rico’s beaches clean. In a great turn of events, dozens of people took note of his advice and picked up 268 pounds of trash on the Ensenada Yegua beach alongside the organizations, Para la Naturaleza and Conservation Opportunity.

The “Ciega, Sorda, Muda” singer is under fire in Spain. The Spanish government claims Shakira allegedly failed to pay 14.5 million euros ($15 Million USD) in taxes. Now, prosecutors seek to sentence the once-Superbowl-Halftime-star for approximately eight years should she be convicted for her alleged tax fraud.

Shakira has been indicted on six charges. The Colombian pop star refused a settlement deal offer last week as she maintains her innocence and chose to go to trial. The trial date is yet to be determined.

Though perreo intenso was Bad Bunny’s main objective, last Thursday, during his first show in el Choli,  the ”Un Verano Sin Ti” artist made known his disdain towards Pierluisi by calling him a mamab – – – and expressing his dissatisfaction with the Puerto Rican government as well as with LUMA. Then, Pierluisi and his supporters responded by saying that El Conejo Malo was being disrespectful and his actions could be seen as an attack. LUMA also responded by directing Puerto Ricans to understand how AEE and UTIER are at the base of the issues.

Not being one to ignore any situation, Bad Bunny responded at his Saturday concert. He acknowledged his disrespect and used it as his rebuttal by telling Pierluisi that the disrespect lies in the teachers’ and police officers’ low wages. He told his audience that he finds it disrespectful how many Puerto Ricans don’t have access to a hospital and that he’s tired of the government thinking they are dealing with pendejos. The “Me Porto Bien” composer ended by saying that the government chose the wrong generation to mess with.
