Former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst dies at age 30

Cheslie Kryst, who was crowned Miss USA in 2019, died after jumping off a building in Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department.

“In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie,” her family said in a statement obtained by CNN. “Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined.”

Hailing from North Carolina, Kryst practiced civil litigation law at a law firm and worked to help prisoners who may have been wrongfully convicted obtain reduced sentences, free of charge.

Rafael Nadal wins the Australian Open final

Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final in the fifth set. After five hours and 24 minutes of play, Nadal won his 21st men’s Grand Slam title, setting a new all-time record.

Boat capsizes in Puerto Rico, leaving ten missing

Federal authorities detained 17 Dominican migrants Friday after their boat capsized off Puerto Rico’s northwest coast in the pre-dawn hours, with the U.S. Coast Guard searching for ten others still estimated to be missing.

Bad Bunny returns to WWE at Royal Rumble

Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny returned to the WWE stage at the Royal Rumble bout that kicks off the road to WrestleMania. Benito was spotted in St. Louis before the show and surprised the crowd by stepping into the ring towards the end of the Rumble.

Bad Bunny may now hold the record for the longest run by a celebrity in the Rumble, even eliminating Sheamus while he was there. The rapper’s night ended shortly thereafter when Brock Lesnar, another surprise entrant, tossed him over the top rope.

New York bids final farewell to Jason Rivera, the 22-year-old police officer killed in shooting

A sea of people flooded Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on Friday as thousands of police officers gathered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to bid farewell to Detective Jason Rivera a week after he was killed responding to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem.
