A tribute concert honoring Rosalía scheduled for Thursday in the Argentine city of Córdoba was canceled after its organizers received a wave of hate messages and expressions of anger directed at the show. The cancellation arrived in the middle of a controversy that began the day after Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final, when Rosalía shared a TikTok video that Argentine fans interpreted as a provocation, setting off a reaction that extended well past her own social media accounts and into the broader cultural landscape of a country where fútbol is not a sport but an identity.

The show had been organized by an Argentine production company with no connection to Rosalía herself, had been in development for over four months before any controversy existed and was designed as a symphonic celebration of her career combining flamenco, pop, electronic music and orchestral arrangements at the Museo Metropolitano de Arte Urbano in Córdoba.

What the Organizers Said

The production company explained in a public statement that it had received numerous messages of hate and anger in the hours leading up to the show and that the decision to cancel was made to protect the artists involved. They described themselves as Argentines who understood the anger, the sadness and the disappointment their country was feeling after the World Cup final, while also making clear that their project had been conceived entirely independently of the events that had since overtaken the conversation around Rosalía’s name in Argentina.

How the Controversy Started

The repost that triggered everything happened the day after Argentina’s loss. Rosalía shared a TikTok video in which Mia Khalifa sang a fragment of “La Perla” accompanied by a caption suggesting that life now sounded different after the Argentine defeat. The audio included lyrics about local disappointment and national heartbreak, and the word “perla” in the Spanish context carries a sarcastic meaning used to describe someone as untrustworthy or shameless, which amplified the Argentine reaction considerably.

Rosalía deleted the content and issued a public apology through Instagram, saying she had shared it because she heard “La Perla” playing and had not read the caption, describing it as her mistake and asking for forgiveness. She added a second post alongside an Argentine flag saying she has only love for Argentina. The apology was swift but the reaction had already spread, with many Argentine fans publicly stating their intention to sell or return tickets to the four Rosalía concerts scheduled at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires on August 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th as part of her LUX international tour.

Why This Went So Far So Fast

Argentina had lost a World Cup final it came desperately close to winning, in a tournament where Lionel Messi played what may have been his last match in an Albiceleste jersey, and the emotional temperature of the country left very little room for anything that could be read as mockery. The cancellation of a tribute concert organized by Argentine producers who had nothing to do with the original controversy is the clearest illustration of how far that reaction traveled in a very short time. Rosalía’s Buenos Aires concerts in August now exist in a considerably more complicated atmosphere than they did a week ago, and what happens between now and then will determine whether the apology was enough.
