What better way to start this year’s National Hispanic Heritage month than by our President showing support to our fellow Latino communities? President Biden will be present at this year’s 45th Annual Awards Gala, organized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), on September 15.
What’s the CHCI’s leadership conference about?
The gala is part of the CHCI’s Leadership Conference, which takes place from September 13 to September 15. It offers twenty-six sessions featuring over two hundred national leaders, elected officials, and influencers, per its official website.
“It’s an example of the commitment of our nation’s highest-ranking leaders to our community and desire to engage with us directly – to speak to us, to hear from us, to learn about our needs and desires,” CHCI’s CEO, Marco Davis, said about the national leaders’ engagement.
This isn’t the first time President Biden is involved with the CHCI. According to The Hill, he has participated twice before – once as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2020 and the second time as President in 2021.
“When we were virtual it was definitely a very different experience. I will say that the president did send a video message that we were able to air when we were virtual last fall, so technically he participated … but him being [there] in person is a very different thing,” Davis told The Hill.
Prior to this, the last President who attended was former President Obama. Due to former President Trump’s “slanderous comments and strongly disagreeable actions for the Latino community in the United States,” he wasn’t invited.

This year’s gala theme is “Rooted in Strength, Achieving Our Dreams.” It aims to “highlight the very essence of our community, grounded in a rich history and vibrant heritage, leveraging both to pursue our highest ideals and the American Dream.”
They will honor the late Afro-Caribbean queen of Salsa music Celia Cruz and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
Vice President Kamala Harris will also be part of the conference this year. She’s set to speak at the leadership conference on September 13.
The CHCI is the premier Hispanic nonprofit and nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization in the country dedicated to developing the next generation of Latino leaders, per their website.
