Carli Lloyd’s Extraordinary Field Goal Has NFL Coaches Asking Her to Be the First Woman in American Football

Carli Lloyd, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, two-time World cup champion, and World Cup Golden Ball winner may add one more accomplishment to her resume in the near future: first woman to play in the NFL. It’s not going to happen this year, but the decorated U.S. Women’s National Team forward Lloyd is seriously considering taking the precision and power of her kicks from the soccer field and into the football arena, following the 55-yard field goal that she made at the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp last week.

“This has all been so wild. Can’t believe how big this has become,” Lloyd told Fox Sports on Monday. While she took more steps than a kicker would typically have time for before making contact with the ball — any more than two steps leaves a kicker vulnerable to getting taken down — the footage of Lloyd’s accomplishment ricocheted around the football universe and apparently caught the attention of several NFL coaches. One NFL team supposedly offered to add Lloyd to their roster for their upcoming preseason game. “I am having discussions with my husband and James about the reality of playing in the NFL,” Lloyd continued. “They both feel that I could do it and should consider it. So I’m seriously considering it, as it’s a challenge (and) I would probably enjoy it.”

Lloyd’s coach Preston Galanis explained that they have been discussing all angles of this opportunity — what it would mean in the context of the NFL, of sports in general, of gender equality. At the personal level, training with the NFL would satiate her competitive drive. “We are definitely thinking about it,” Galanis told Fox Sports. “Knowing Carli, this is why it is enticing for her because it is a challenge. That’s what Carli thrives on, it is the next thing she can conquer. That’s why we have had half a dozen conversations about it in less than a week.”

He explained to ESPN that she had no intention to rush into the opportunity, as exciting as it sounds. “If she’s going to do this, she’ll do it — she’ll train in the offseason, she’ll get herself ready so that she just doesn’t do it for the sake of doing it. If she’s going to do it, she’s going to do it so that she can be a success.”
